Hope you all made the most of your may-as-well-have-been-a holiday weekend last time around. These five day weeks are tough, who came up with that idea?
5) Formula E in Red Hook
Ok, not a show, but sometimes it’s good to throw a curveball in this column from time to time. Formula E is coming back to Red Hook this weekend for the third year running and this isn’t the kind of thing you think about seeing in the city. There are some quirks to Formula E, including fan boost. Saturday and Sunday
4) Pronoun, Wild Pink at Rough Trade
This is the record release show for Pronoun‘s new album, I’ll Show You Stronger, and Rough Trade should be a great place to hear some treble-heavy bedroom pop. Thursday 7:30pm
3) Top Nachos, Darkwing, The Rizzos, Early Branch at The Gutter
I say it each time I list a show at The Gutter in this column but it really is a great place to see a show, especially ones with bouncing pop-punk bands like Top Nachos and The Rizzos (both of whom released a split EP last year), if that’s not enticing enough Early Branch‘s sunshine soaked tunes open things up and Darkwing‘s no-nonsense sludge is perfect beer swilling music. Thursday 8pm
2) The Messthetics, Lulu Lewis at Union Pool
Drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally are better known as the rhythm section in Fugazi, but in their absence we still get treated to the occasional excellent band, in this case, The Messthetics. The trio are rounded out by guitarist Anthony Pirog and they pack a mean punch. Friday 8pm
1) Purling Hiss, Foster Care, Stefan Christianson at Union Pool
Best known for blistering guitars and intense live shows, Purling Hiss have just released a digital-only EP called Interstellar Blue, which is almost hippy-like by comparison to their other work. Saturday 8pm
