Happy labour day weekend, everyone. Summer is officially ending and not a moment too soon given the weather this week… you can still hit a couple of outdoor shows, even head to the beach if you want, but I would personally like to welcome our hopefully less humid autumnal overlords.
5) Holly Miranda at City Winery Loft
Unfortunately Holly Miranda has had to cancel tonight’s show in the Loft at City Winery due to illness. We wish her a speedy recovery.
Holly Miranda’s latest effort, Mutual Horse, was released in February via Dangerbird Records and features Kyp Malone of TV On the Radio on Exquisite, which you can hear below. The whole record is wonderfully varied and knitted together with her exquisite voice. I’ve yet to attend a show at City Winery’s loft venue, but giving that it’s closing in 2020, it would seem a good idea to rectify that. Thursday 8pm
4) Shonen Knife, The U.S. Americans at Brooklyn Bowl
If you want nothing more than sugary pop-punk this weekend then look no further than Brooklyn Bowl. Shonen Knife have out out 20 records worth of the stuff since forming in Osaka in 1981. Friday 6pm
3) Sun Ra Arkestra at Union Pool
Originally scheduled for the 23rd of June, the show was cancelled due to the weather. Let’s hope for better luck this time out in what has ended up being the final Summer Thunder of the season. Although Sun Ra has been dead for 25 years, the Arkestra are still going strong. Saturday 2pm
2) No Ice, Holy Tunics, Jemez at Rockaway Brewing Co. at the Beach
Since Labour Day marks the end of summer, get down to the Rockaways one last time for the year, grab some tacos and head to Rockaway Brewing Co. on Beach 72nd street and enjoy three fine acts: No Ice’s Elvis Costello meets The Lemonheads, Holy Tunics’ jangle-pop and shoegaze experts Jemez. Friday 8pm
1) Thou, Uniform, Sunrot at Knitting Factory Brooklyn
New Orleans’ has produced some great sludge bands over the years, but the best and most inventive for my money is Thou, who are putting out their fifth record, Magus this weekend, via Sacred Bones. Not only is it a fantastic record, they also just released three excellent EPs which you can download from their bandcamp page. Another Sacred Bones band celebrating a record release is Uniform, who released The Long Walk a couple of weeks ago and is their strongest effort to date. Saturday 7pm
