Greetings! I hope everyone had a fabulous July 4th weekend (some of us left the country). With a short working week, everyone should be in good spirits, so let’s get right to it and start making weekend plans.
5) Magrudergrind, Trenchgrinder, UNIFORM, Pox, Filth Hound at The Acheron
Brooklyn is saying goodbye to another music venue this weekend as The Acheron closes on Saturday. Many venues have sadly departed at an alarming rate in the last few years, but The Acheron will leave a real void for metal and hardcore shows that only leaves Saint Vitus flying the flag. Saturday 11:30pm
4) SISU, Azar Swan at Union Pool
Sisu, the band of Sandra Vu (former Dum Dum Girls drummer), haven’t played New York in a while, so don’t miss the chance to catch them at Union Pool on Friday. The band’s last record was 2013’s excellent Blood Tears, but have promised a new single in the near future, so perhaps they will be debuting some tracks on Friday night. Azar Swan will make for a fine opener with an intense, gothic set. Simone Pace of Blonde Redhead will be the DJ for the night as well. Friday 8pm
3) Goodbye Death By Audio, A Place to Bury Strangers at Old American Can Factory
Finally the Death By Audio documentary, Goodnight Brooklyn, gets an NYC showing courtesy of the Rooftop Films Summer Series. It wouldn’t be a DBA event without some live music too, of course, and two of their own (who also played the last ever show at the venue), Grooms and A Place to Bury Strangers, will be playing sets after the screening. Also, don’t forget to order Ebru Yildiz’s photo book, We’ve Come So Far. Saturday 8pm (live music starts at 11pm)
2) 4Knots Music Festival at South Street Seaport
Now in its 6th year, the 4knots festival returns to the seaport after heading up to Pier 84 last year (it’s also free once again, having been ticketed in 2015). Spread across three stages, the lineup is as good as ever with one of my favourite bands, Ohio’s finest, Guided By Voices headlining. They will still rock more and drink more than bands a third their age, but bringing up the rear sees a fine supporting cast including Protomayrtr, Car Seat Headrest, Diane Coffeee, and many more. Set times and more information can be found here. Saturday 1pm
1) John Carpenter at PlayStation Theater
The horror master himself released one of our favourite albums of 2015 with Lost Themes and followed it up with the imaginatively titled Lost Themes II, via Sacred Bones in April. This is his first ever tour as a live artist, and since the shows are billed as a live retrospective, they promise to be quite special as I’m sure we’ll also hear many of his iconic soundtracks pieces. At the time of writing there are still some general admission tickets available so don’t sleep on this if you are planning on going. Friday 8pm
