As enjoyable as CMJ is (see our review), being back on a more regular routine is highly comforting. Although as apartment heaters begin creaking back to life, the change of seasons seems to be taking it’s toll on immune systems though, so be careful out there and drink your fair share of hot toddies or scotch to kill all those bugs.
5) Bongzilla, Blackout, Marching Teeth, Hasj Saint Vitus Bar
Music won’t be the only thing to light up Saint Vitus this evening, expect contact highs to go with thick, exploding riffs. I could no doubt fill this paragraph with various puns, but that would be doing a disservice. The band’s last album, Amerijuanican, is getting a deluxe vinyl re-issue later in November. Thursday 8pm
4) They Might Be Giants at Music Hall of Williamsburg
As sure as eggs are eggs, when New York treasures, They Might Be Giants, play a local show, it’s always special. The band are calling this show Horntoberfest, focusing on their horn section, so if you like your TMBG brass-heavy, this is definitely the show for you! The band just released their 42nd weekly Dial-a-Song, To A Forest (which doesn’t have horns but I imagine will get played). Sunday 7pm
3) Steve Gunn, James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg at Union Pool
Guitar maestro Steve Gunn takes over Union Pool for a couple of nights this weekend, having last graced the area during Summer Thunder. Playing primarily electric these days, Gunn is starting to unleash the shackles on his playing somewhat, from the intricate acoustic feel of previous records, his band are completely in sync and are a joy to watch. And they still know when to just slow everything down and haze out. Support comes from acoustic duo James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg. Friday and Saturday 8pm
2) Krill at Silent Barn
Boston’s Krill are calling it a day, and this is the last chance you’ve got to see them. Unsurprisingly that means this show sold out pretty quickly. The band have had a pretty good run since 2010 and released their third album, A Distant Fist Unclenching, earlier in the year and are bowing out on top. Also, excellent news that Silent Barn is hosting shows again after the recent fire on-site. Maybe there will be some tickets on the door. Friday 8pm
1) Julia Holter, Motion Graphics at Rough Trade
With Have You In My Wilderness, Julia Holter has made the jump to a more produced, lush record, some might even say the dreaded word “commercial”, but even if that is true, she has done so without abandoning her previous sound and quality. Saturday 8pm
