Top 5 shows of the weekend

I guess something is happening this weekend, right? Something about independence day, I forget, I did watch that documentary with Will Smith all those years ago. There are some fireworks to see as well. If you’re just looking to rock out with hopefully an extra day off to enjoy, we’ve got you covered too.

5) Left & Right, Milk Dick, Swings, The Yin Yangs at Aviv
Left & Right make the relatively short trek from Philadelphia to play at Aviv tonight, and since Thursday is essentially Friday for most people, there’s really little excuse not to hear some crunchy power-pop. Guitars are definitely the order of the day, with Milk Dick, Swings and The Yin Yangs all bashing around. Thursday 8pm

4) Ben Seretan Group, Wilder Maker, Steve Sobs at Baby’s All Right
Ben Seretan is probably described as post-something whenever he’s mentioned, his music has a soundtrack-quality and is intricate but not just for the sake of it. The rest of the bill should have a singer-songwriter vibe, with Wilder Maker’s folk -leaning set a nice way to gently lean into the weekend. Friday 8pm

3) Izzy True, Vagabon, Fern Mayo, Painted Zeros at Silent Barn
Izzy’s debut EP, Troll, just came out on Don Giovanni records this week, and lead single Swole, is a lovely little slacker-tune. The guitars get a little fuzzier with Vagabon and Painted Zeros. Friday 8pm

2) Pile, The Austerity Program, Couch Slut at The Bell House
Exploding in Sound artists Pile released You’re Better Than This in March, and the band are at their jarring best, turning the amps from 1 through to 11 whenever they feel like it, lulling you into a false sense of security in the process. Support is rounded out by Couch Slut, who seem to appear most weeks in this column, while the Austerity Program’s bass-heavy grunge should also get the blood pumping. Friday 8pm

1) Swirlies, Krill, Advaeta at Silent Barn
Swirlies are celebrating their 25th anniversary of their record Blondertongue Audiobaton with a vinyl reissue, their tour takes in 2 NYC shows; Friday night seems them playing the album in full (for possibly the only time) at Silent Barn on a bill that also includes Krill and Advaeta. On Sunday the band play at Baby’s All Right with Laced and Kudgel. Saturday 8pm
