The workers were in their shop on Grattan Street and Knickerbocker Avenue in East Williamsburg just before 8 a.m. when they saw the men walking along the road, pulling on the door handles of cars in an apparent attempt to steal belongings from inside, the police said.
The employees, both men in their 50s, approached the group, the police said, chasing them around a corner.
A 53-year-old sheet metal worker was shot several times in the chest, and pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.
The three men, who the police said were in their 20s, fled, and investigators were still searching for them Tuesday afternoon.
“We have several video feeds on this; we’re looking at it now,” Robert K. Boyce, the chief of detectives, told reporters at the scene of the shooting. He said the police expected to release photographs of them on Tuesday.
