Other Half is bringing a huge brewery to the Domino Sugar site

This is great news for beer nerds in North Brooklyn. We’re big fans of Other Half! Along with Singlecut, Finback, Grimm, LIC Beer Project and Root & Branch, their hoppy IPAs are among our favorites in the city.

Other Half is plotting a 3,600-square-foot brewery inside 1 South First, a new mixed-use building under construction at the corner of Grand Street and Kent Avenue. It’s the same dramatic Cookfox-designed building where another location of beloved pizza restaurant Roberta’s will be. The real estate development is expected to open at the end of this year and is part of the overall revitalization of Williamsburg’s Domino Sugar site.

Co-founder Matt Monahan says the brewery will serve its classics as well as some new beers. It will be its second location in Brooklyn, and its third overall. Other Half is also opening a spot in Rochester in March. The Carroll Gardens-based company is known for its “potent, aromatic and juicy,” according to drinks publication Punch — and it has a huge following among beer obsessives, especially finance guys who “are clearly in it for the cachet.”

The brewery will join other notable restaurants that have a presence in the area like Roberta’s, opening later this year, and Missy Robbins’ pasta restaurant Misi, which has been packed since its opening at 325 Kent St. last fall. Clinton Hill craft beer and grocery Mekelburg’s has also opened in that same 325 Kent Street building, the first of several new projects in the area.

Hopefully they’ll be nicer than their buzzy competitors over at Grimm, who opened a tap room in East Williamsburg over the summer. Last time we visited Grimm, we requested a sample after shelling out over $50 for a few pints. Instead of getting a taste, which is standard protocol at a tasting room, we were greeted with a scowl from the bartender who informed us it wasn’t “the best use of her time.”

Ugh. We’re hoping for a better experience at OH.

Grimm had a “no tastes” policy at opening last summer but changed the policy almost immediately. You can now get tastes.

Hey Free Williamsburg! J is correct. We are a brewery that is always looking for ways to give our customers the best experience. When we realized last summer that people desire tastes of our beers, we quickly added this to our bartending protocol. Next time you’re writing a story that includes our brewery, please reach out! We’d love to chat, and help fact check 😉

    Thanks,
    Lauren Grimm
