My interest was immediately piqued when I saw the logo (above) for the recently announced 90’s Fest on September 12th at Williamsburg’s 50 Kent. I was a teenager in the latter half of the 90’s and I love music/nostalgia! I was not so pumped after seeing the lineup:
Is this really the best we can do for a 90s festival in NYC? Sure I’d love to hear Lisa Loeb sing “Stay” as much as the next person but come on. Trotting out Blind Melon with god knows who singing lead vocals, bread dodging Smash Mouth, and one-hit wonders Tonic? I mean just look at what Coolio looks like these days:
I even loved that recent documentary about Pauly Shore, but the whole thing was about how sad his life is. At least give us a slightly higher quality level of currently touring 90s acts like Weezer, Counting Crows, Weird Al, Third Eye Blind or by god I’d even take the Smashing Pumpkins in whatever form they are currently in. Are people really going to pay upwards of $68 to watch these bands do sets in 2015? Can we just condense it down into one big “hits” set where everyone does 1 or 2 songs and calls it a day?
According to Billboard there will be some other activities aside from the music:
Other planned activities include giveaways from Seinfeld-inspired Instagram personality F*ckJerry, a 90s-themed bedroom hosted by social media star Betches, a Nintendo Mario Kart tournament and an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest “Macarena” dance ever. Teases producer Marc Weinstein of Leuven Media, “now that Pepsi has teased Crystal Pepsi may be coming back , we may be able to offer Crystal Pepsi-based cocktails to our guests in VIP as well.”
Ok I will admit a Mario Kart tournament sounds pretty great. Anyway tickets are on sale now.
