Apparently, Cubana Social is yet another casualty of rent hikes as Williamsburg becomes more and more unaffordable. A longtime FreeWilliamsburg favorite, we’re going to miss their Cuban-style, slow-roasted pork which was a staple for the neighborhood. Christina Bouza, who founded Cubana Social, posted these words about the closing on the restaurant’s website:
Maybe what’s most special is the energy felt within our walls from the people who’ve come together and contributed their love. Notably, much of Cubana’s staff & musician family has been with us since the beginning. Quite unusually, we’ve experienced more of a change in neighbors than employees. Cubana Social is one of few remaining old faces in a barely recognizable Williamsburg. While realtors have taken the place of artists in curating a new surreality, rents have soared sky high, fueling the cycle of displacement.
As the doors close at 70 North 6th, where we have communed for 6 years, I recognize that we are in a moment of great transition. For many places and people, discriminatory violence, systemic oppression, indigenous struggle, globalization and the destruction of our natural wildlife are escalating all around us. In acknowledgement of all of this, I express my hope to honor our community and the magic and warmth we’ve had the privilege to make as Cubana Social, and to do so with enormous gratitude.
To commemorate their remaining few days, they’ll be hosting three nights of live music.
