It’s already been a good week with shows by Tool and Mikal Cronin in the bag, so let’s pull things kicking and screaming into the weekend.
5) Maneka, Moist Boy, Pest!, Cold Dice at The Gutter
You might recognise Devin McKnight as the guitarist in Grass is Green and formerly of Speedy Ortiz, his latest project is Maneka, who just released debut album Devin on Exploding in Sound Records and it’s a genre-bending record that deserves to get some traction. The Gutter is always an excellent space to see a rock show too. Saturday 8:30pm
4) Suuns, Preservation at The Sultan Room
Montreal quartet Suuns get a little more out there with each album and 2018’s Felt is their trippiest to date. It’s a bit like if Radiohead had continued the Kid A/Amnesiac sound to its conclusion. Saturday 9pm
3) Future Bible Heroes at Symphony Space
You might remember The Magnetic Fields in this column last week and we continue Stephin Merrit’s residency at Symphony Space with a show by Future Bible Heroes, the synthy/disco side-project is often overlooked in Merrit’s discography but features some outstanding moments. While they haven’t released anything since 2013’s Partygoing, it’s a rare performance and not to be missed. Thursday 7pm
2) Unsound New York at Knockdown Center
If you want some experimental electronic music this weekend then Unsound at Knockdown Center is the only place to be. Featuring a host of artists including ambient heavyweight Tim Hecker and the likes of Caterina Barbieri, Pedestrian Deposit and a dozen or so more. Check the website for full listings. Saturday 8pm
1) High on Fire, Power Trip, Devil Master, Creeping Death at Elsewhere
If you’ve been hankering for a heavy metal show recently then you’re in luck as High on Fire rock up to Elsewhere for two nights (Thursday tickets / Friday tickets). It’s a stacked bill with Creeping Death, Devil Master and Power Trip all worth seeing in their own right. No messing around here, just straight up metal. Thursday and Friday 7pm
