Colder temperatures are coming in, folks, and almost all the featured shows this week could well be enjoyed around a fireplace. Get some extra layers on and don’t let the cold put you off enjoying yourself.
5) Chris Cohen, Lina Tullgren, Lightning Bug at Rough Trade
If you didn’t catch the memo back in April then you’ve got another chance to catch Chris Cohen on this album-cycle for his self-titled (his third solo record). I called him “a bit of a treasure” back in April and I’ll stand by that. Saturday 8pm
4) Friendship, Peaer, Shannen Moser at Trans-Pecos
If you want a dose of Americana this weekend then Trans-Pecos is the place to be on Saturday if the lead tracks from Friendship‘s new record, Dreamin’ are to go by. The record gets released on Friday and the show kicks off a short tour of the Northeast and Midwest. Shannen Moser should be an excellent opener with slowcore act Peaer sandwiched nicely in the middle. Saturday 8pm
3) The New Pornographers, Lady Lamb at Brooklyn Steel
In the Morse Code of Brake Lights was released in September and is The New Pornographers‘ eight studio album, it’s a pretty good record though seems low-key in the scheme of things. Maybe it just takes a few more listens to sink in… regardless, they’re always excellent live and you should see them at Brooklyn Steel. Thursday 7pm
2) Julia Jacklin, Christian Lee Hutson at Warsaw
February was so long ago now it’s easy to forget that Julia Jacklin released the quite superb Crushing, she seems so effortlessly at the top of her game. Steering away from the more traditional folk of her debut album, Crushing reminds me a little of Sharon Van Etten circa Tramp/Are We There with a few more BPM. As always, don’t skip the perogies. Friday 8pm
1) Superchunk, Torres at Murmrr Theatre
My favourite Superchunk album (Foolish) is twenty-five years old this year and the band celebrated by re-recording an acoustic version of the whole thing. It’s not a half-hearted attempt at a rehash either, with some sweeping strings and horns thrown in for good measure. What was an already emotionally charged album is laid more bare in the stripped down format, Murmmr should be a nice setting for what might be more of a celebration of the record that was originally a hard time for the band. Torres opens up the show having signed for Merge back in June. Thursday 7pm
