I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend, survived valentine’s day, and is generally looking forward to making plans for Spring. After a couple more quiet weeks show-wise, we’re back with some fine choices.
5) Beverly, Wildhoney, Fits, Blush at Saint Vitus Bar
This strikes me as a bit of an odd show to be hosted at Saint Vitus, with four treble-infused indie-pop bands sounding about as far removed from what you’d come to from the city’s (or perhaps even, the country’s) premier metal venue. Regardless of the setting, all four acts are well worth catching in their own right. Beverly’s last record, The Blue Swell, was released in 2016 but they were playing new tracks last year that sounded great. Sunday 7pm
4) Jacuzzi Boys, The Muckers, Gnarcissists at Baby’s All Right
While they open for The Dandy Warhols at the Highline Ballroom on Friday, the Miami trio will be best experienced headlining their own show at Baby’s All Right on Sunday. If you like melodic garage rock then all three bands are not to be missed, but I took particular delight at The Muckers’ tune that they have on their bandcamp page, Suspended for a Long Time was released last month and if the rest of their output is as good then I’ll be eagerly awaiting a full-length record. Sunday 8pm
3) Monogold, New Myths, Patio, Painted Zeros at ALPHAVILLE
One can sometimes take this kind of show for granted, a collection of excellent local bands, until you realise that it’s one of the great benefits of living in the city in the first place. Painted Zeros’ crunchy but melodic, almost shoegaze quality will kick things off in the best way. Patio just premiered a new track over on thesleigh.com, New Myths are the band you definitely should not miss on this bill while Monogold always remind of Kitchens of Distinction in the best way. Friday 8pm
2) Pill at MoMA
It has been a couple of years since Pill‘s excellent debut, Convenience, and the band will be releasing a new EP in March (there’s a record release show at Baby’s All Right on the 10th), but you can hear some new tunes before that at MoMA, which should be a great setting for the band. Attendees will also be treated to a DJ set by Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance. Thursday 7pm
1) Screaming Females at WFMU Monty Hall
It shouldn’t really be any surprise that the New Jersey trio have sold out three nights at the cozy WFMU Monty Hall in Jersey City, I’ve described them for years as the best live band around. The band are set to release their seventh album, All At Once, via Don Giovanni Records (speaking of whom, check out their new subscription service), is a double-LP recorded by Matt Bayles (who recorded previous record, Rose Mountain). The three shows will be opened by Teenage Halloween (Thursday), Snakeskin (Friday) and Spowder (Saturday) respectively, for those lucky enough to have tickets already, of course. Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8pm
