Top 5 shows of the weekend

expert alterations

There are plenty of options for Halloween this weekend, so we’re sticking with the regular format here this week, rather than fill it with bands playing cover sets or other such quirky seasonal stuff. No, if you’ve come this far into the week and still haven’t decided if dressing up as Pizza Rat is the thing to do or not, chances are you just aren’t that into this whole halloween thing anyway. Here we are with some options for those of us looking to keep it regular.

5) Richard Lloyd, New York Junk, Faith at The Bowery Electric
I saw Television recently and while there were moments of inspiration, I felt the set was also a little flat in places. Richard Lloyd hasn’t been in the band since 2007 but after seeing him play at the Big Star tribute in Central Park a few years ago, he still has the chops. Support comes from New York Junk with their Johnny Thunders-influenced rock and roll, and the reggae-tinged Faith. Friday 7:30pm

4) Wax Idols, Them Are Us Too, Azar Swan at Saint Vitus Bar
One genre that doesn’t seem to have had much of a reboot is that classic 80s goth sound, but Wax Idols are bucking the trends at the moment. Fronted by Heather Fortune, the quintet will be paired well with Them Are Us Too as well as Azar Swan. Despite the guitars having more of a shimmer than a sludge to them on Saturday evening, everyone will still be wearing black so it’s business as usual at Brooklyn’s premier metal hangout. Wax Idols have just released a video for Lonely You, from their latest album, American Tragic. Saturday 8pm

3) Chris Gethard, Low Fat Getting High, Gary Richardson, The Black Black, Conner O’Malley, Mike Dobbins at Shea Stadium
Tonight is not just about the riffs at Shea Stadium as they host comedians as well as bands on Thursday night. Music comes in the shape of Low Fat Getting High, Bambara and The Black Black, while Chris Gethard, Gary Richardson, Conner O’Malley and Mike Dobbins will be making you laugh. To combine multiple aspects of this show, here is Low Fat Getting High performing on the Chris Gethard show. Thursday 8pm

2) Flipper (w/ David Yow on vocals), Big Business, Dennis McNett (visuals), DJ Shannon Cornett, DJ Zane Landreth at House of Vans
We already gave you the lowdown on this show here, so check that out for RSVP and information. Don’t just go if you are only interested in the free beer though, have some dignity. Saturday 7pm

1) Expert Alterations at Rough Trade
My top pick for the week is a freebie, so head down to Rough Trade on Friday after work and get a good solid dose of Orange Juice flavoured jangle-pop. I’ve seen the band a few times and will never get bored of that guitar sound, and since it’s an early show you didn’t even have to pay for, you can keep whatever plans you already had and still make it out. Friday 6:30pm
