This new new eatery is bringing a promising menu to the midst of the burgeoning Williamsburg restaurant scene. Spearheaded by executive dhef Mallika Khan from Bangladesh, Tikka Indian Grill is serving up both traditional and contemporary Indian dishes that highlight many perennial favorites and flavors from the diverse cultural regions of India. Chicken Saag Tikka, Jhinga Balchao and Chennai Lamb are a few standout dishes, all served with locally sourced veggies and naan baked fresh on the premises. The decor is comfortable yet modern, and the ambience complete with soft cultural music will top off the experience.
Bedford and Bowery were pleased:
Hossain, who previously worked at BR Guest and Jean Georges restaurants and was most recently the bar captain at the Gansevoort Hotel, told us he almost never eats at Indian restaurants, since he prefers homecooking – but when his partners, one of whom owned a Bangladeshi restaurant in Jamaica, Queens, introduced him to chef Malika Khan, he immediately fell for her cooking. The Bangladesh-born chef has worked in Calcutta and London, but she “learned her cooking from her mom,” and it shows. “This is the way we eat at home,” Hossain says.
The menu, which nods to both northern and southern India, features vegan and vegetarian sections (Khan gets ingredients from Indian grocers who source from local farms), and breads and sauces are made in-house daily. Hossain says that if you don’t find your go-to dish on it, they’re willing to do their best to whip it up. In that same accommodating spirit, diners are invited to bring their own bevies (even the hard stuff), since the place doesn’t yet have a beer and wine license.
NY Post has more:
Bangladesh-born Chef Mallika is launching Tikka Indian Grill in Williamsburg later this month, at 185 Grand Street between Bedford and Driggs avenues.
The menu highlights Indian cuisine from different regions. Fall offerings include aloo gobi — spiced potatoes and cauliflower — and Pumpkin kala chana, which combines red pumpkin, black peas and mustard seeds.
