January may have felt a lot like Groundhog’s day, what with massive festival lineups dropping day after day. Among which is one of favorites, the nearby Governors Ball Festival, which takes place annually on Randall’s Island and continues to pull many of the seasons best acts. This year is no different, with the return of Kanye West and The Strokes in headlining slots, as well as a Governors Ball debut for The Killers. Beck is also back for the first time in five years, and if that’s not a reason to get excited, well then hell, I don’t know what is. You can experience all of the action June 3-5th, 2016. Sorry AEG, you can wait for your “new Coachella”.
The undercard is equally impressive and undeniably synth-infused, touting first time appearances for numerous electro-pop outfits like M83, The Knocks, Chet Faker and CHVRCHES. Bloc Party, Miike Snow and Two Door Cinema Club bring similar vibes with a touch of rock. Of course, those looking for a folk fix will find it in performances from Father John Misty and Iceland’s own Of Monsters And Men. As usual New York has plenty of face time with local acts like pop duo Matt & Kim and rapper Action Bronson topping the list of reasons to get schwifty. FREEwilliamsburg faves Fidlar and Catfish and Bottlemen are even coming. This seems like a no brainer.
So you totally want to go, right? Well you better get on it! Tickets are FLYIN’! In fact, according to Governors Ball’s marketing team, this is the fastest they’ve seen them move . . . EVER. So don’t be left in the dust while I’ll your friends are breaking in festival season in style! You can still get discounted GA advance tickets for $290 + feesĀ or go all in on VIP for $700 +fees, but only if you act fast.
So we’ll see you on Randall’s Island June 3-5, right? Siiiiiiiiiick.
Why does everyone keep calling it a new “Coachella”. Yes the festival is put on my GV which is owned by AEG puts on a ton of other festivals (i.e. Firefly, FYF, Hangout Fest, etc…) Coachella was literally named after the city that it is hosted in. It is a 3 day musical festival in the middle of the desert which you can camp at for 4 days… Its not like they are bringing the city with them. Hell we could of called this a NY Firefly or NY Hangout festival but yet every news article is calling this an east coast Coachella.
