Thieves make off with 'pot of gold' from Greenpoint apartment

potofgoldSt. Patrick’s day may have passed, but that didn’t stop thieves from searching for a pot of gold at the end of a Greenpoint rainbow. From DNAinfo:

A five-gallon jug containing thousands of dollars in coins — potentially weighing more than 200 pounds — was stolen from a Greenpoint home March 23, police said.

The victim, a 37-year-old man, said the jug was about one-third full with “mostly” quarters and valued between $3,000 and $5,000, according to police.

Wow that’s 3,000-5,000 games of foosball at Matchless (sorry I’ve been playing a lot recently and I can only think of coins as food for foosball tables). Ok so how can people who want to keep large jugs of coins in their basement learn from this and prevent such a robbery?

The man left his basement apartment around 8:50 p.m. to go to the store. When he returned about 9:40 p.m., the jug and money were missing.

Police said the front and room door were both left unlocked and ajar, according to the victim.

Oh.
