This week’s edition of the Most Blogged About Shows is 100% recession proof. Our MOST BLOGGED ABOUT show and my EDITOR’S PICK can both be had for the princely sum of “on the house,” and they’re both all kinds of awesome. Oh, and we’re giving away some pretty awesome tickets this week as well.
That being said; the recession is something that’s always on my mind, especially heading into this November’s presidential election. It’s fitting then, that this week’s MOST BLOGGED ABOUT SHOW is Colbchella, Stephen Colbert’s FREE festival at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. I can’t think of any better backdrop for a Colbert festival than a museum on a pier with battleships and fighter jets, and the lineup is similarly incredible; Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear, Santigold, Grandmaster Flash and fun. This thing gets kicked off on Saturday at 3 PM.
On Friday, River Rocks continues with its strongest lineup to date (and that’s saying something after the Dan Deacon/John Maus show last month), with Wild Nothing, Grimes and DIIV at Pier 84. Wild Nothing’s Nocturne is due out later this month and should be a strong follow up to his 2010 breakthrough, Gemini, and we’re guessing he’ll be previewing a few of his new tracks. This is Grimes first proper show in New York since her post-Visions sets at Glasslands and Mercury Lounge took over the blogosphere back in March (she DJ’d 285 Kent last week with Pictureplane), and DIIV is probably the most BLOGGED about band of the year, at least in this column, if only because they play seemingly every day. Oh, and their debut Oshin just happens to be one of the best albums of the year.
Speaking of DIIV, there’s another Beach Fossils side project in the early stages of blog incubation, and that’s their bassist John Pena’s band, Heavenly Beat. Their debut EP dropped a couple weeks ago on Dazed Digital (via Captured Tracks) and is full of fuzzy beat driven chillwave-y pop. Heavenly Beat actually predates Beach Fossils, but Pena is leaving Beach Fossils to concentrate on this project. They play their first show as a band on Wednesday as part of a MY SOCIAL LIST/KRISTINA TEQUILA PRESENTS (that’s right) showcase at Public Assembly, with Plastic Flowers, Young Boys and You.
M83 plays his Summerstage show the same night, but that’s sold out; even MORE REASON to come to our show. The pride of New Zealand, Tame Impala, return to the states TOMORROW for a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Young Magic and that one also sold out. Hopefully you didn’t get shut out of that one; they put on a great show. Caught em last go around with Yuck.
In keeping with the “recession-proof” theme of the week, there’s another great free option for you on Friday night over in Prospect Park; Little Dragon, Frankie Rose and Voices of Black’s Celebrate Brooklyn show. It may be a bit less packed than Wild Nothing, and a bit easier to get to, depending on where you’re coming from. Little Dragon DJ’s later on in the evening at Glasslands, with Physical Therapy and Rezound.
If you don’t want to trek out to the west side this weekend, Ava Luna play just across the Williamsburg Bridge at Mercury Lounge with Sinkane of Yeasayer, and Turnip King, Island Twins, Lazyeyes, Not Blood Paint and Chappo (also playing at Delinquency later in the evening) play Party XPO down in Bed-Stuy. Those are both on Saturday, and Big Snow Buffalo Lounge has a solid lineup on Friday of local favorites; Jangula, Chris Carr, Bird Courage, Xander Naylor, Steve Nelson, Maria Vaz and Cody Swanson. Darlings also have another show at Glasslands on Friday, and that’s just $8.
TONIGHT – make sure to check out Delay, Nude Beach, Hop Along and These Days at Death By Audio. It’s worth a night with no air-conditioning, trust me.
