The My Social List team has covered CMJ extensively over the past two weeks. We’ve listed over two-hundred shows. We’ve interviewed bands. We’ve provided handy guides to each day of the festival, and alerted you to all the best free shows. There’s so much going on, that it’s almost tough to keep track of US, let alone the festival itself.
That’s why I’m posting an official guide to CMJ here on FREEwilliamsburg. Five can’t miss shows for every day of the “music marathon,” in no particular order. There’s still a couple of shows that haven’t been announced (the Brooklyn Vegan day parties come to mind;) but rest assured, they’ll be added to our comprehensive CMJ list as soon as they’re announced. For the budget minded, check out this list of free shows.
My Social List Official CMJ Showcase: Thieves Like Us, Teen Daze, Delicate Steve, Dent May, Heavenly Beat, Mac DeMarco, Bleeding Rainbow, The Young Evils, Grand Resort, Lingerie DJ set (Marlin Room at Webster Hall, 6:00 PM) $12
Why you should go: Because despite my obvious bias, this is probably the best collection of buzzed artists for the entire week. Don’t believe me? Keep reading, and you’ll see. Oh, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this one.
Oh My Rockness CMJ/B’day Party!: Chrome Canyon, Metz, Roomrunner, Moon King, Moodrings, Heavenly Beat (Cameo Gallery, 6:30 PM) $8
Why you should go: Because Metz are possibly the best live act of all of CMJ. Plus, they just got “Best New Music.” CRED.
Terrible Records CMJ Party!:Light Asylum, LE1F, Kirin J Callinan, Regal Degal, Diamond Terrifier (Glasslands, 8 PM) $10
Why you should go:Because the lineup is absurdly eclectic; dark post-wave dance music, weird rap, punk, free-form jazz? Sign me up.
Permanent Wave/Greenpointers Blog/Campers’ Rule: Heliotropes, Leda, Beach Day, Backwords, The Suzan, Easy Lover (Public Assembly, 7 PM) $8 (free alcohol all night)
Why you should go: This one had to move to Public Assembly, following the dreadful news that Delinquency is (temporarily) shut down. Come find out why Brooklyn Vegan loves Beach Day so much.
LPC Presents: Caged Animals, Eula, Gunfight, Sparxx, Squarehead, So Cow, Surfing (Legion Bar, 6 PM) $5
Why you should go: Because this is an amazing collection of local bands, particularly the no-wave goodness of Eula, and country-rock twang of Gunfight.
Flying Lotus, Death Grips, Ali Shaheed Muhammad DJ set (le Poisson Rouge, 8 PM) FREE
Why you should go: If you need a reason for this one, stop reading this blog.
Pictureplane, Prince Rama, Mykki Blanco, Jerome LOL, Flume, Michna, Win Win, Eraas, Wild International (Cake Shop, 12:15 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Because this is one of the best free day parties of the whole festival. It’s always great to see Pictureplane step out of the DJ booth and do a live set.
Why you should go: Because holy shit at this lineup of rappers. Don’t miss Cities Aviv, Digital Lows was the most slept on album of 2011.
Stereogum & PopGun CMJ Party: Dum Dum Girls, Guards, Savages, Icona Pop DJ set, Port St. Willow, io Echo (Glasslands, 8:15 PM) $5
Why you should go: Because Dum Dum Girls for just $5. Sleeper band on this one: Savages. Remember the name.
Hype Machine Handpicked: The Virgins, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Neighbourhood, Indians, JJAMZ (Brooklyn Bowl, 6 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Three words. Unknown. Mortal. Orchestra.
Judgment Night: Action Bronson, The Alchemist, Ratking, Spaceghostpurrp, Savages, Savoir Adore (House of Vans, 6:30 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Because there’s a high probability of free weed and Peter Luger’s steaks.
DIIV, Mac DeMarco, Thieves Like Us, Dignan Porch (Music Hall of Williamsburg, 7:00 PM) $13
Why you should go: Because you slept through your alarm and missed DIIV at Union Square Ballroom.
Sub Pop CMJ Showcase: Pissed Jeans, King Tuff, Metz, Poor Moon, Daughn Gibson, Debo Band (Knitting Factory, 7 PM) $13
Why you should go: Because this showcase proves that Sub Pop’s still got it. Pissed Jeans? King Tuff? Metz? Holy lord god.
My Social List & Domino Street Present: The Intelligence, Roomrunner, Wild Yaks, Royal Baths, Young Boys DJ set (Public Assembly, 1 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Because I’m contractually obliged to recommend that you go to this. But seriously; Wild Yaks have a new record coming out, Royal Baths has switched the lineup around, and we’ve brought in two amazing touring bands andddddddddd it’s free.
Goodnight Records & My Social List present: Weekend, Friend Roulette, Fan-Tan, KNTRLR, Heaven, Lou-is, Life Size Maps, Sun Ladders, The Flag (The Gutter, 5:30 PM) FREE w/ RSVP (free alcohol early too)
Why you should go: Because this is a booze cruise in a bowling alley, and the only chance you have to see Weekend for free.
Car Park / Paw Tracks showcase: Prince Rama, Young Magic, Dent May, Popstrangers, Dog Bite, Montag, Adventure (Cameo Gallery, 6:30 PM) $12
Why you should go: To see if Prince Rama are going to hock their workout program.
Why you should go: Because Black Marble are the next great post-punk band. And because you love this blog.
Why you should go: Ummm… wow. Just take a look at that lineup.
Why you should go: I’m running out of creative ways to say the lineup is awesome.
Why you should go: Because all your friends are playing this one.
Tanlines, Blood Diamonds, Dave P DJ set (Le Bain, 10 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Because if Le Bain thinks you’re cool enough to get in, you should probably go. And then remind them they’re in Meatpacking District, which hasn’t been cool in like fifteen years.
Wild Nothing, Braids, Weekend, Forma (Bowery Ballroom, 7:30 PM) $16
Why you should go: Wild Nothing aside; Braids and Weekend are both incredible.
Doldrums, Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, Troy Ave, Prince Rama, The So So Glos (Knitting Factory, 8 PM) $12.
Why you should go: Because this lineup is a musical non-sequitur. I’m not sure what So So Glos have to do with Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, but hey, I’m not complaining.
Hunters, Starred, Levek, Psychic Twin, Trap.Avoid, Decades, Bloodnstuff (Pianos, 7 PM) FREE
Why you should go: Because the loud and soft mix of the brutally chaotic Hunters swirled with the vast isolated minimal-wave of Starred is a beautiful thing.
Why you should go: To catch a glimpse of Caroline Polacheck.
Why you should go: Because Sky Ferreria is one of the more intriguing acts of CMJ.
See you out there…
