So glad we got to spring forward into this glorious weather we’ve been having. If you want to avoid all the St Patrick’s Day nonsense (why people think this is any better than Santacon I don’t know…), here are a few chances to avoid people pretending to be Irish, leprachauns, or generally broing out.
Another week down, another week of depressing Trump-related theocratic idiocy, at least there are a few fun things to do this weekend in amongst the necessary protests and rallies. Thanks to Peter for stepping in last week, I can say that doing a 70-hour working week with a fever is not terribly fun, but is a good way to lose weight if you’re still carrying those extra lbs from christmas. Anyway, here we go…
There really is a fantastic run of events this weekend, and what made the cut was put ahead P.S Eliot/Ought at Market Hotel, Allah-Las at Baby’s All Right, and The Album Leaf at Littlefield to name a few. Slightly out of town is the excellent Don Giovanni-led New Alternative Music Festival out in Asbury Park. Finally, the 2016 Vendy Awards are at Governor’s Island on Saturday, and there are still a few tickets available at the time of writing, it’s always a great event, especially if you’re a fan of street food (2015 review here).
It’s going to be a hot one this weekend. Drink responsibly, use sunscreen and maybe, just maybe, some good shows will be able to make us forget we’re melting, just for a few brief moments. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor options for you below.
No reason for wanton circumlocution this week, we’re going to get right down to it. Have a great weekend, everyone, hopefully enhanced by the fine options below.
5) Bambara, Ritual Humor, One Prayer One Sin, Decorum at ALPHAVILLE
While Bambara have been bashing out distorted, Birthday Party-esque noise for half a decade, the band’s latest offering, Swarm, manages to retain their intensity whilst allowing the songs (and vocals) to shine through from whence they were previously buried. It’s not so much a case of taking a commercial turn, the record isn’t remotely poppy, more a confidence in the material that has been set free. Friday 8pm
Today is St Patrick’s Day… fantastic… now everyone in the city who ever saw a picture of a four leaf clover or had a pint of Guinness is apparently Irish. I might just curl up in a ball and hide, but that would be a mistake, because if you can avoid all the green pavement pizzas en-route to where you’re going, there are some great shows to be seen.
I’m still not sure if I thank Washington, Lincoln, both, or none, for the short work week, but here we are, it’s Thursday already. We’re not going to get record-breaking freezing temperatures or 2 feet of snowfall this weekend, so for those who have been hermits the last couple of weekends, this is especially for you.
