Goodbye to The Gorbals, hello Esh

Serving up “Everyday Israeli barbecue” Esh opened quietly last night in the space above Williamsburg’s Urban Outfitters. The Gorbals — which was always overpriced, overrated and empty — never caught on despite solid reviews and a celebrity chef Ilan Hall who won season two of “Top Chef.” From the Times:

This could be Tokyo or Osaka, where restaurants inhabit spaces several floors above the street in office buildings. [Read more…]

Tonight at The Gorbals – free Bill Murray film series kicks off with Caddyshack

Starting tonight at The Gorbals rooftop bar on North 6th (between Berry and Wythe  — above, ugh, Urban Outfitters) there’s a new free film series featuring Bill Murray films. “Murray Mondays” is an 8-week series that kicks off with Caddyshack  and goes every Monday until the end of September. Here’s the full line-up: [Read more…]

Menu: The Gorbals is open in Williamsburg

Reservations are now available, which seems dumb, since this joint is on top of an effin Urban Outfitters. From Eater:

The New York outpost of Ilan Hall’s LA restaurant The Gorbals opens for dinner tonight in Williamsburg’s new Urban Outfitters “concept store” Space Ninety 8. The menu features several dishes cooked over the restaurant’s large wood-fire grill, including lamb ribs, porgy with bonito butter, and bone marrow with hen of the woods mushrooms and creamed walnuts. Other items include banh mi poutine, whole roasted pig head, and the well-known cheeky bacon-wrapped matzo balls. The promised large-format schnitzel “with the hoof still on” turns out to be a “chicken schnitzel with talon.”

Open next week in Williamsburg – The Gorbals

The Gorbals is set to open next Tuesday (July 22) with a menu that includes bacon wrapped matzo balls. The Urban Outfitters blog — um, we know — spoke with the chef Ilan Hall, Season two’s Top Chef winner. Urban Outfitters? Top Chef? Boy is Williamsburg edgy these days. When do we get our American Girl store?! Here’s what The Gorbals chef has to say about his new menu:

I’m trying to use things that are really seasonal and maybe a little bit more obscure. Not obscure but, like, less common fish. Most people don’t put bluefish on their menu—bluefish is one of my favorite fish. I’d rather use a skate cheek than a skate wing. I’d rather use a monkfish liver or a monkfish tail. There are so many great parts of an animal, and you don’t have to always use the basic filet. There’s this farm really close to where I grew up on Long Island in Glen Cove that, in the spring and summer, has amazing produce. We’re opening at the best possible time for New York [produce]. There’s peas, ramps, spring garlic, fava beans, soft shell crab, Bouchout mussels from Maine.

On his favorite places to eat in Williamsburg:

Every time I have a meal, I’m inspired. I love places in the [Williamsburg] neighborhood: St. Anselm, Café Mogador. I love eating wherever I can, all the time.

We’re excited about The Well, which opens in June in Bushwick. Otherwise, Eater has thrown together a great list of openings slotted for New York very soon. Here are the North Brooklyn picks:

Arrogant Swine
Where: 173 Morgan Avenue, East Williamsburg
When: July or August
What: The very first restaurant from Tyson Ho, the proprietor of the Hog Days of Summer pop-up series. At this massive new Morgan Avenue restaurant, Ho will be focusing on west Carolina-style whole hog barbecue and country ham. The barbecue buff recently told Serious Eatsthat he wants to establish the restaurant as “a church of pork.” You can track Arrogant Swine’s progress on Ho’s Instagram.

Littleneck Outpost
Where: 128 Franklin St., Greenpoint
When: Early May
What: Aaron Lefkove and Andy Curtin (AKA the Littleneck dudes) expand to Greenpoint with a cafe that will serve lobster rolls, clam rolls, and other sandwiches, plus breakfast items and La Colombe coffee in the morning. Littleneck Outpost will also offer specialty grocery items, kitchenware, and picnic boxes to go.

The Meat Hook Sandwich
Where: 495 Lorimer St., Williamsburg
When: Early May
What: A sandwich shop from Tom Mylan and the crew from Williamsburg’s beloved four-and-a-half-year-old butcher shop The Meat Hook. Expect an Italian sub stuffed with house-made charcuterie, a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, a Cubano filled with lard-poached carnitas, and a gyro made with grass-fed beef. [Read more…]

Brooklyn Based has compiled a great list of anticipated 2014 Brooklyn restaurant openings. Here are the ones they’re excited about in Greenpoint and Williamsburg:

Umami Burger Williamsburg
California’s upgraded answer to Shake Shack has been impossible to get into since opening its first East Coast location in Greenwich Village last year, and soon Brooklynites won’t have to cross the river to see what all the fuss is about. Bedford Avenue and North 4th Street will reportedly be the site of Umami’s new Williamsburg location, serving truffle-glazed burgers later this year. Opening date unknown. [Read more…]
