PSA: Summerscreen returns to McCarren Park tonight with a free sunset screening of Back to the Future. As in past years, Todd P and Showpaper have curated all-ages shows to run in the park before the films get going around 9ish, so if Biff Tannen and hoverboards aren’t enough to lure you to the corner of North 12th and Bedford this evening, perhaps the fuzzy noise-pop of Tonstartssbandht and The Dreebs will get you through the gates.
If you feel like keeping the party going after the movie, a new Kristina Tequila, Nicky Ottav, Danny Brooklyn and Jeffrey Thomas-hosted Wednesday night party will be taking place between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. at McCarren Hotel & Pool’s (160 North 12th Street btw Bedford & Berry) new rooftop bar. Prince Terrence and Tamaryn will be DJing tonight.
Here’s the full lineup for this year’s SummerScreen:
July 9 – Back to the Future, Tonstartssbandht, The Dreebs
July 16 – Zoolander, Ratking, Princess Nokia
July 23 – Cry-Baby, Man Forever, White Suns
July 30 – Heathers, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (Sean Lennon + Charlotte Kemp Muhl), NYMPH
August 6 – Big Lebowski, Kleenex Girl Wonder, Tanks Amigo (mems Crystal Stilts + Cause Co-Motion! + My Teenage Stride)
August 13 – Audience Pick!, DJ Dog Dick, Eartheater (Alex Drewchin of Guardian Alien)
Gates open at 6 p.m.
Starting on July 10th the outdoor movie series SummerScreen returns to McCarren Park (Bedford and N. 12th). Todd P will be curating the yet to be announced music lineup for SHOWPAPER. The first five movies are listed below, and you can vote for the final movie here.
Can’t Hardly Wait
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
Tonight at Summerscreen, we’ll be kicking it in South Central with everybody’s favorite homeboy gone well, we’re not sure…We’re talking about the movie that taught us all not to owe drug dealers money — Friday, of course!
Get there early to check out a musical performance by our girl TECLA — who you’ve probably spotted killing it on the keys alongside Gordon Voidwell. TECLA’s carefree-upbeat synth partners with her sensual rasp to create a sound that has been described as “SWV on acid” that’s sure to get you all sorts of transfixed.
Doors open at 6pm, performance by TECLA at 7pm, and Friday starts at sundown. So put on your favorite red or blue bandana and come on down to the ballfields on the corner of North 12th and Bedford tonight and every Wednesday for the next few weeks, you may even win an iPad2.
Check out the full lineup of nostalgic movies and our neighborhood’s favorite bands (curated by yours truly) after the jump… Did we mention that it’s FREE!?
Starting at 6pm tonight, there will be tons of foods (hence the floating lobster rolls to our left) and music by Total Slacker and a band you might not have heard of yet, but let me tell you why you should pay attention.
Red Romans is the new project from Chris Burke of Beach Fossils fame, so they’re obviously gonna be awesome. Also, while we’re name dropping, Total Slacker’s drummer is the bro of Beirut’s Zach Condon— and I’m sure he loves that everyone keeps talking about it. Moral of the story– pretty boys on instruments, and pretty boys on film. Damn, do we miss Patrick Swayze and 90s Keanu Reeves. “The correct term is babes, sir.”
Doors 6pm, Red Romans 6:30, Total Slacker 7:30, Screening of Point Break 8:30 on the corner of N 12th & Bedford.
This a free event, so bring your blanket and your boyfriend. Be sure to check out the trailer for the 1991 classic after the jump.
