Top 5 shows of the weekend

Kristin Hersh SDOMA Still

Here we are, most likely the final “top 5 shows of the weekend” post of 2016 (I feel like scrooge at christmas when it comes to new years eve…). The weather is going to be as bitter as Donald Trump, so wrap up warm, have your earplugs ready, and make the most of it.

Love is in the air, or not, this weekend; I’ll be able to help with the latter. Hopefully it’s a long one for all, however, with President’s Day on Monday. Forget about the potential -18 degrees Celsius temperatures (come on people, let’s stop using Fahrenheit, it’s so unbecoming and idiotic), wrap up warm and get out of the yawning chasm of nihilism that has been 2016 so far, we’re better than this.

FREEwilliamsburg’s Top 25 Albums of 2015

high-fidelity-jack-black-netflixRanking the year’s best albums is always a stressful process argued over many beers, and if we’re at it long enough, many whiskeys. This year, there were many whiskeys, and we ended up with a… different list than a lot of the ones you’ve been reading over the past month or so. We’re proud of that. These are the albums we truly enjoyed most in 2015. The entire internet will tell you to check out the new Kendrick, Grimes, Tame Impala and Sufjan records. tripmetal5) Washer, Patio, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control and Spit at Palisades
If you’re in the hunt for some good ol’ fashioned indie rock, then Palisades has the show for you this weekend. Washer don’t really sound anything like Slint, but in my mind, they take their name from the hushed Spiderland track of the same name. Their songs are more conventional; clearly more indebted to the legendary Louisville band’s contemporaries Pavement and Superchunk, but their name certainly evokes the era of indie rock they’re operating within. They’re one of the most promising bands on the venerable Exploding In Sound Records, with two solid splits to their name this past year (with Big Ups and Flagland.) Doubting Thomas Cruise Control, Spit and a a new band, Patio open.

4knots

Oppressive humidity appears to be the order of the day at the moment, just in time for a myriad of outdoor shows. Alas, cavorting is always preferable to hopeless ennui. Remember though kids, stay hydrated and wear your earplugs, and after that public service announcement, it’s on with this weekend’s best shows…

This wretched month will finally come to an end by the time the weekend is out, but February does leave us a nice parting gift in the form of some fantastic shows that should get you out of whatever hopefully warm abode you call home.

Live Review: Screaming Females at the Knitting Factory

Screaming Females Knitting Factory

Don Giovanni arguably have the most consistent roster around right now with the likes of Brick Mower, Priests, California X, Waxahatchee, Black Wine and flagship band, Screaming Females all gracing the New Brunswick-based label.

Screamales kicked off their latest tour in Baltimore the previous night and there was no sign of any early-tour rustiness as the band customarily blitzed through their sold-out 60-minute set at the Knitting Factory on Saturday evening. You can also listen to new single, Wishing Well, after the jump.
