Top 5 shows of the weekend

Sleep

Since the last “Top 5 shows of the weekend”, we’ve crossed the first official day of summer, I’ve somehow managed to survive another full orbit of the sun, and best of all, finally made it out to Hometown BBQ. It hasn’t all been good though, just to add to the rotten run of form 2016 has been on, The Acheron is also closing down soon. Finally, by the time this goes out, you’ll only have a couple more days to make a final purchase at Other Music before it closes on the 25th, so do make some time for that in between catching some great shows.

4knots

Oppressive humidity appears to be the order of the day at the moment, just in time for a myriad of outdoor shows. Alas, cavorting is always preferable to hopeless ennui. Top 5 Shows of the Weekend

pissedjeansChris Quartly is headed down to Austin Psych Fest this weekend for three days of peyote-fueled vibing to the likes of The 13th Floor Elevators, Jesus and Mary Chain and Lightning Bolt, so I’ll be filling in for this week’s edition of “Top 5 Shows of the Weekend.” I promise 84% more emo/pop-punk and two good reasons to start your weekend a little early. Pissed Jeans covered Agnostic Front

Summer is finally here, so are the season’s free shows. Union Pool hosts a series called Summer Thunder in their courtyard on the patio, typically during the afternoon on Saturdays. Yesterday, Cold Fronts from Philly and Sub Pop’s Pissed Jeans delivered some sunbathing jams, including a cover of Agnostic Front’s classic “Victim in Pain”.

Fucked Up, Cro Mags and others played House of Vans

Last night Cro-Mags, Fucked Up, Screaming Females and Pissed Jeans played a free admission show at House of Vans in Brooklyn. It was a dripping wet show all around, starting with a torrential downpour that hit a couple of thousand kids outside shortly before doors opened at 7pm. Once inside the drenched show goers were greeted by sauna like conditions. Condensation was dripping from the ceiling while a band had yet to set foot onto the stage. Corporate sponsorship or not, it was a kick ass Brooklyn style warehouse summer show. Personally, I take this over any sterile Bowery Presents event any day. Shit was raw and messy, the way these things need to be. Footage of Cro-Mags, Fucked Up and Pissed Jeans is below. Screaming Females we unfortunately missed as we had to grab a bite outside.
