Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Half of our top 10 shows this week will happen tonight and tomorrow, so we assume you may be pretty busy already. We are in the midst of a hurricane of announcements for new shows, as well, with Halloween, CMJ and even New Years Eve lineups rolling out. Keep your eyes peeled to Freewilliamsburg, My Social List and this column for updates about shows going on sale.

Tickets are still available for tonight’s show with Toro Y Moi, Ava Luna and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. You can also catch “The Big Four” – Metallica, Megadeath, Anthrax and Slayer – at Yankee Stadium; we hear that you may be able to exchange your first-born for good tickets.

We hope that you were able to get on the Vice RSVP list for tomorrow night’s Upfront Extravaganza with Rick Ross, A-Trak, Death From Above 1979, Tanlines and many more. The RSVP is now closed, and those who submitted will hear back today whether they made the cut. A good backup option is Glasslands with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hospitality, Blouse and Man/Miracle.

TV on the Radio

TV on the Radio

The next seven days are all about fashion and dancing. If you haven’t already checked out our list of Fashion Night Out parties, do it now. (We’ll wait here for you.)

Ok… you’re back! First, let’s talk about Thursday, one of the busiest show days of the year. For those not interested in dancing or fashion, TV on the Radio and Broken Social Scene are playing the Williamsburg Waterfront. If you are an NYU student, head over to (le) Poisson Rouge for your exclusive — and free! — show with Flying Lotus, Gang Gang Dance and Light Asylum. Too cool/old/delinquent for school? Consider Best Coast at Helmut Lang or Real Estate at 44 Mercer Street.

Another great option to shake your booty is the Prom at the Music Hall of Williamsburg next Tuesday, hosted by Jason Sudeikis with DJ sets by Yeasayer, BAIO (of Vampire Weekend), CANT and Neon Indian. You can catch Neon Indian earlier the same day at Other Music for a free in-store performance. Bowery also has a pair of neat shows with Active Child, Com Truise and Young Athletes League on Saturday and Das Racist, Danny Brown and Despot (sold out) on Monday.

Pepper Rabbit

Pepper Rabbit

Sadly, our prayers from last week were not answered and the rain wiped out some of the best shows of the summer. Please take a moment of silence for the Afro-Punk Festival and the other shows that didn’t make it.

Now let’s get down to the business of this week. If you’re into hip-hop, you should already have tickets to our No. 1 show: Rock the Bells on Governors Island on Saturday with Lauryn Hill, Nas, Cypress Hill, Black Star, the GZA and many, many more. Electronic music more your thing? Luckily, Electric Zoo is going on all weekend at Randall’s Island with Tiesto, Moby, Diplo, Armin Van Buuren and a lot of other options to get your booty in the groove. Another great FREE option — with a mix of electronic and hip hop — takes place at City Winery on Labor Day: Fools Gold’s Day Off includes Juicy J, Danny Brown, Just Blaze, the Brothers Mackolovitch (A-Track & Dave 1) and others.

The pool may be dead, but Jelly is not! Check out our No. 2 show, Rock Yard at The Morgan with Pictureplane, White Hills, The Psychic Paramount, Wise Blood and the Realness on Saturday. Other indie options include Bright Eyes and Dr. Dog at the Wiliamsburg Waterfront tonight, and Twin Shadow and Daimond Rings at Maxwell’s on Tuesday.

The Most Blogged About Shows Of The Week

Sun Araw

We know it’s unconstitutional in schools, but let’s begin this week’s Most Blogged-About Shows column with a prayer for Hurricane Irene to change course and not ruin this week’s outdoor shows.

Dear Lord,
Summer is almost over.
We love shows.
Don’t rain on us.
Amen

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s begin with your top priority: Spending the weekend in Commodore Barry Park for the Afro-Punk Festival. For NO COST you can see or most buzzed-about show with Santigold, Das Racist, Cee-Lo, Janelle Monae and many, many more on Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re still hungry for more, we’ll humor you with a few more great options this week. Tonight, St Vincent will be performing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (although no longer on the roof). PS1 Warm Up on Saturday has another great lineup, featuring Tanlines, Nguzunguzu, Teengirl Fantasy, Sun Araw and Physical Therapy. And Spotify presents another FREE show at Mercury Lounge, with the U.S. debut of CANT and Blood Orange on Sunday night. Get there early or spend the night in line.

The Most Blogged About Shows Of The Week

Memory Tapes

Memory Tapes

This week’s top shows offer something for everyone, with a nice mix of indie, dance and a dose of hip-hop. At No. 1 we have an extremely Brooklyn-based show at the (non-Brooklyn) Bowery Ballroom on Saturday, with Woods, Ducktails, White Fence and Widowspeak. Before that, join lots of young hipsters on Thursday in Prospect Park for indie faves Cut Copy, and lots of old hipsters on Friday at the Waterfront for Sonic Youth.

If you can afford tickets to Nas at Summerstage ($45!) please invite us to the show; we are low on cash and high on his lyrics. If Cut Copy isn’t enough dance for you, you can trek to Jersey on Sunday for the Identity festival, featuring a super lineup of DJs including Kaskade, Steve Aoki, DJ Shadow and a long list of other talent. Otherwise, join us for Warm Up! at PS1 on Saturday, with Black Dice and a band whose name I would never want to have to pronounce, oOoOO. Find the rest of our weekly top 10 below.

The Most Blogged About Shows Of The Week

Aaron Pfenning a.k.a Rewards

You’ll have to travel a little farther than Brooklyn if you want to see our #1 and #3 shows of the week. The Escape to New York festival at Long Island’s Shinnecock Reservation starts this Friday with Patti Smith, Best Coast, Chairlift and more. Be prepared to pay (a lot) for the privilege, but you’ll be treated to a great lineup the entire weekend.

Staying in the city? There are a couple of notable shows around town. Again, the House of Vans is high up on our list (#6) with Man Man, Glass Candy and Crystal Antlers. We’re hoping the torrential downpour from last week won’t return — but bring a poncho just in case! Another one not to miss: Aaron Pfenning of Rewards, Only Son and a Blood Orange DJ set at Manhattan Inn. And if you don’t mind braving the crowds, you SHOULD check out Friendly Fires, The Naked and Famous and Cults at Central Park Summerstage.

Finally — if you’re lucky enough to have scored tickets — we’ll see you at Bon Iver at United Palace Theater (or Prospect Park) for a sold-out show with the Rosebuds.
