The Trailer For The CBGB Movie Is Here

And we love the tagline: ‘50,000 bands and one disgusting bathroom.’

It’s out October 11

Alan Rickman leads an all-star cast as Hilly Kristal, the financially unstable entrepreneur who opened the iconic club in 1973. CBGB, which stands for “Country Bluegrass Blues,” ultimately closed in 2006 over a rent dispute but lives on as the largest music festival in New York City.
“Why would you save for your dreams?” Rickman, as Kristal, asks in the trailer. “Why not live your dreams?”
Among the acts teased in the preview are Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, Dead Boys, The Police, Iggy Pop and Patti Smith Group, among others. Malin Akerman, Rupert Grint, Ashley Greene, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Hurst, Justin Bartha, Donal Logue and Bradley Whitford are among the film’s stars.

Can musicians really make enough money to pay rent? These guys say yes.

Jesse Cannon in the studio.

Jesse Cannon in the studio.

Statistically, at least according to an informal survey of bar patrons I conducted last weekend, Williamsburg and Bushwick are home to more musicians than most other parts of the city. Which should mean that all of us are more than familiar with the tired trope of the struggling musician who’s just waiting to be signed: the bands playing to the same group of 20 friends each week, and somehow guilt you into paying that $5 cover almost every time; your drummer who hops from piss-stained mattress to piss-stained couch while he’s waiting for his “big break”; that 300-press of your band’s CD you made that you’re now using as a nightstand. As much as New York is the place we all come to dream big, it’s also the place we watch those dreams, and our bank accounts, slowly shrivel and die.

Enter Williamsburg-based music industry veterans Jesse Cannon and Todd Thomas. Cannon has not only been producing and managing bands for more than a decade, with groups like Animal Collective, The Misfits, The Cure, Leftover Crack, The Menzingers and Man Overboard; he, along with his partner Thomas, has been covering the way the music industry ‘s been rapidly changing on his blog, And just this week, the two of them decided to turn that blog into a comprehensive, 700-page look and DIY guide to the real way the music industry works today: Get More Fans: the DIY Guide to the New Music Business.

Solange is playing a free show in McCarren Park

solangephoto via thetimes

As part of the 2013 Northside Festival (June 13-16) Solange will be playing McCarren Park on June 16th. The Walkmen will also be playing a show in McCarren the day before as part of the festival. Tickets for both shows are free, but you have to RSVP HERE for The Walkmen, and HERE for Solange. Be sure to get there early for Solange to see My Midnight Heart (shameless shout out to friends from back in the day) who are opening along with Petite Noir and Cable.

Captured live: Isadora at Glasslands

The guys in Isadora invited team blaqbook over to check out their set at Glasslands a few weeks ago. So I grabbed some good then met my boy Layton(Courtesy Tier Drummer) at the venue. A bunch of cool bands were on the bill. I caught ANML and Isadora then made my way back to my apartment.

By the time Isadora’s set started the place was packed and they definitely delivered. The crowd was definitely focused during their set. Isadora takes you high, then low, then trips you out a bit, and then rock back out. Never really a dull momment. They keep you on your feet and they’re impossible to predict. Great set guys.

Captured live: ANML at Glasslands

The guys of NYC based band Isadora invited me to Glasslands to catch their set. Before there set this dude ANML was playing. He was pretty cool. He would loop a bunch of instruments then pick a primary one to play while singing. With Glasslands lighting and effects this video came out really cool. Check it out and let me know what you think.
