Live Review: La Hell Gang played Glasslands

Le Hell Gang Glasslands 3

La Hell Gang recently signed to Brooklyn’s Mexican Summer label and played their first ever US show on Wednesday night at Glasslands.

Having followed Chilean pyschedelic rock extensively over the last couple of years, it is always a rare but essential opportunity when a band rolls in to town. Given that La Hell Gang’s new album, Thru Me Again, is only their second in close to 5 years, it was definitely not a show to miss.

Chilean band La Hell Gang sign to Mexican Summer

La Hell Gang

Chile (in particular, its capital city, Santiago) has been a melting pot of musical inspiration over the course of the last decade and is, in my opinion, delivering the best music around at an unrivaled consistency.

New York is cottoning on to this sonic boom from South America; The Holydrug Couple and Föllakzoid have already been snapped up by Sacred Bones, both of whom I recommend highly.

The latest band hoping to break through is La Hell Gang, who have just signed to the Brooklyn-based Mexican Summer, home to the likes of Fresh and Onlys, Ariel Pink, Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin. The label will issue the band’s second album, Thru Me Again, on the 24th of June. [Read more…]

Mexican Summer Celebrate 100th Release With Ford & Lopatin, Tamaryn, & Shannon Funchess

Since 2008, Mexican Summer has been cranking out records from some of our favorite artists like Best Coast, Washed Out, Kurt Vile, Real Estate, Nite Jewel and well, you get the picture, right? So we’re excited to see the release of their 100th record — two tracks from our synth-enamored friends Ford & Lopatin featuring Tamaryn and Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum fame.

May we suggest kicking off your night to the beat of  “Snakes,” then flipping the record for the late-night lullaby “Flying Dream” once you’ve made it back home with a belly full of Frito Pie.

Order the limited edition clear vinyl 12″ over at Mexican Summer & check out the rad cover art poster of all of the label’s past releases after the jump! [Read more…]

Quilt played Glasslands

image c/o Mexican Summer

Did you miss the Quilt EP release show at Glasslands last night? Bummer.

Quilt is a band from Boston, one that will hopefully be gracing Brooklyn with much more of it’s presence. The band is primarily made up of one part Shane Butler and the other Anna Fox Rochinski (the record also has some Taylor Mcvay thrown in there.) Concocting expansive 60’s inspired psych, I’m particularly a fan of Quilt because they seem to focus on just doing their own thing.

Quilts self-titled album just came out of Mexican Summer, which you can purchase here.

If you did miss the show…stream some of their music here, close your eyes, and just pretend you didn’t.
