It’s mostly affecting kids thus far, but wash your hands! Kids ruin EVERYTHING:

Children have been sick and highly contagious by an infection caused by the Shigella bacterium, which has been spreading across Brooklyn.

As CBS2’s Ilana Gold reported, the bacterial infection has been a particularly big problem in Borough Park and Williamsburg. Eighty cases have been reported since November – most in children – and the number has been growing…. [Read more…]

Williamsburg parents bring entire crib to brunch

crib

Do you want to go out to a trendy brunch in Williamsburg yet still give your child the freedom to roam around? You can just do what this Williamsburg couple did at Rosarito Fish Shack. From DNA info:

They were further stunned when the couple asked if they could push the crib up to one of their sidewalk cafe tables and have their child hang out in it while they ate brunch.

“That certainly was a first,” said Rosarita’s daytime manager Susie Kenny. “We were laughing all day. It was a highlight.”

Kenny added that she wasn’t sure if the crib “passed fire code,” but didn’t want to turn the couple away after they had gone to the trouble of pushing it down street.

Wait so do they just stroll around Williamsburg with this thing in tow? I can’t wait to see them push the crib up to the stage during a show at Glasslands some night.

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls Showcase at MHOW

Typically on Free Williamsburg we are busy documenting how the influx of children to the neighborhood is giving us hives–but not this time folks!  For now we applaud the little ones and the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is giving us reason to do so.  The Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is the Clinton Hill based music and mentoring program dedicated to the empowerment of girls  and women.  Girls aged 8-18 participate in a week long program to get savvy at their instrument of choice and will be showing off their new skills at the Camp’s rock showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg this Saturday the 16th.  It will be as if  School Of Rock has come alive right before your very eyes, except that Jack Black (thankfully?) won’t be there to ham it up.   Purchase tickets here and help support this fantastic program, doors are at 11am and the show starts at 12pm.

While the camp is no longer taking enrollment for summer it is not too late for fall! If you have a lil lady in your life looking for a hobby get them involved in Willie Mae Rock Camp’s after school programs.

Check out some campers rocking out (appropriately) to Sleater-Kinney below:

Students at Williamsburg High School Fight & Post Vids to YouTube, Teachers Blame Technology

Can student fights be blamed on technology?

That’s the question administrators at Progress High School and the School for Legal Studies in Williamsburg are asking as they struggle to crack down on student fights — many of which are ending up on YouTube. Instead of addressing any roots of the problem, they are addressing the means kids hype-up the fights and record them for viewing online.

A teacher at Legal Studies told the Daily News kids are using their cell phones to schedule the fights and later post them on the internet. Her solution to bring peace: “We need to enforce the rule prohibiting electric devices at our campus.”

[Side note: One video Gothamist linked to this morning has already been removed “due to terms of use violation.” Another’s still up with about 1,300 views.]
