Fort Lean played Santos Party House

Last night the rocking boys of Fort Lean played their first headlining show. It was at Santos Party House. It was SOLD OUT. And it was supposed to be the celebration of the “Sunsick” single, their first physical release (because of an error, the 7″s were not available, but the single is still downloadable and still absolutely amazing).

There is something impressive about frontman Keenan Mitchell, who walks on stage already shirtless. Wild yellow hair flying all over the place. Entering right into “High Definition,” from last year’s EP (also available for free download!) They plowed through a high-energy set of songs from the EP, a few new songs and the song of the night “Sunsick,” along with the B-side “The Precinct.”

This band has the ability to perform these songs in a way that is both spot on compared to the recorded versions, and also infusing them with so much personality and captivating the crowd. On “Beach Holiday” for example, every single drum fill was perfectly recreated, Keenan swung his hair and body around wildly. Perfect.

Listen to the new, perfectly coupled one-two punch, “Sunsick” and “The Precinct” below. And be on the lookout for when the 7″ is released.

Village Voice Union Benefit Tonight at Public Assembly

Tonight Public Assembly will play host to the Village Voice’s Union Benefit— a concert geared toward raising money in the event that they go on strike this weekend.  According to the Voice:

“We have a union at the Village Voice that’s been around since the ’70s. Our three-year contract is up at the end of the month, June 30. After decimating the staff, management is trying to slash our healthcare and retirement benefits. We’re really hoping that it doesn’t come to a strike, but there’s a distinct possibility.”

Things will kick off tonight at 8pm with Alan Watts, an industrially noisey darkwave crew out of Brooklyn.  Local “no goodniks” (as the Voice aptly donned them) K-Holes will play as well followed by the Free Williamsburg approved Fort Lean. Also there will be a special PitchforkReviewsReviews DJ set– a great show for a great cause!  Suggested donation at the door is $10 and you can also donate via pay pal.  Get our there and support writers and print media!

Fresh Band Meat: Fort Lean

Brooklyn’s Fort Lean specialize in jangley pop with a surf rock edge and we are completely under their spell.  This fivesome brings a sweet and sour mix of vintagey melodic crooning and grungy rock to their subtly infectious jams.  Just one listen and you will feel like you are leather jacket clad and getting drunk at the drive-in on a breezy summer night in 1966…now doesn’t that sound fun (and specific)?

More good news! they are playing a slew of shows next week so you have no reason not to go see your new favorite band.  Catch them this Sunday at the Rock Shop in south Brooklyn, June 29th at Pianos and at a Karaoke bar in Chinatown (almost like a drive-in) next Thursday June 30th where they will play a very cool party called FUZZ.
