out-in-the-streets

The party hits Bushwick this weekend at the Onderdonk House. From Gothamist:

Enjoy a host of bands, great food, and beer at the two-day Out In The Streets Fest, which will take over the stately grounds of Ridgewood/Bushwick’s Onderdonk House with multiple live stages. Local legends So So Glos are topping the bill, along with Frankie Rose, Potty Mouth, Beverly and more. The artisan-style Ridgewood Market will be at the festival, too, giving you plenty of morning shopping options before the music kicks off each day.

January always seems like a slow month gig-wise, but things are starting to pick up the pace. Ok, so there might be a snowstorm – deal with it, and consider how lucky we’ve been this winter as it is. Regardless of what the elements have in store, you’ll be well rewarded for any efforts made this weekend (although 8 inches of snow is enough to justify that netflix marathon, granted).

royal headache

I can’t say there hasn’t been an air of complete normality this week, but what that really means is stuff like this, businesses treating staff like crap, a new music venue opening and anticipation of sandwiches. Good news everyone, NASA just discovered Keplar-452b, a bigger, older cousin to Earth, I can’t wait for the tripadvisor reviews. A little closer to home, so far this week we’ve talked craft beer pubssmelly Greenpoint, and the Forecastle music festival, and some of the FW music team will be heading out to a ballgame. Well, it seems like a good excuse to drink outside. In any case, the weekend is going to be scorchio, so once again, stay hydrated, remember sunscreen, and avoid direct sunlight by drinking beer indoors when the opportunity presents itself. Here are the top 5 shows of the weekend…

Live review: Mikal Cronin played Bowery Ballroom

MikalCronin

Mikal Cronin celebrated the release of his third solo record with a packed Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night. The new album (helpfully titled MCIII) has a fuller, more lush sound than its predecessor, with strings and keyboards more prominent, while his ear for a pop hook is still on top form.

I have to go to Boston for work this weekend, but that doesn’t mean I won’t treat you right. I will however, get right to it. Here are my weekend tips!

5) Alvvays, Kiwi at Bowery Ballroom
Having seen Alvvays play numerous free shows in New York in the last couple of years, it took me by surprise a little that they’ve not only upgraded to a venue like Bowery Ballroom, but they’ve also sold it out! It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise however, after the release of their self-titled debut album last year, which revealed itself as a an incredibly strong indie-pop record with a heartbreaking sound that bands such as Camera Obscura have given us over more recent years. Thursday 8pm
