‘Bushwick Nightz’ book launch party is tonight

Our friends at Bushwick Daily just released a collection of short stories, Bushwick Nightz. Tonight they’re throwing a party to celebrate:

In 12 original, honest, brutal and completely self-aware stories, you’ll explore the bright and dark moments of all that occurs here from drug deals, to gallery shows, drinking, sex, Zagat-rated meals, gentrification and trying to figure it all out.

Meet the writers in person, hear them read, discuss the stories, drink some champagne & most importantly celebrate Bushwick with us!

8:30-9:30: Discussion & reading moderated by Eric Silver with writers Dallas Athent, Prospero Vega & John Jarzemsky [Read more…]

2014 Northside Music Festival preview

Four days. 50 venues. 350 bands. It’s Northside Festival again, or, as we call it, the most wonderful time of the year, and if you weren’t paying close attention to the local blogwaves, then you might not have even realized it was happening on your doorstep. Unlike spectacle-heavy music fests like Governors Ball and Electric Zoo, Northside, now the borough’s biggest music festival, has remained organic, exploding within Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick’s best (and gloriously air conditioned) venues—as well its selection of epic outdoor options—as if it were just another summer weekend in Brooklyn. Of course, as any Northside Music Festival vet can tell you, the brain-boiling array of talent makes this one anything but average, with the likes of Titus Andronicus, The War on Drugs, Ratking, Fuck Buttons, Perfect Pussy, Marissa Nadler, Watain, and more set to take our beloved stages come Thursday. So grab your badges and gather round as we rundown our favorite shows of the weekend ahead.

Top five non-Governors Ball shows this weekend

fucked upThere is no escaping the shadow Governors Ball will cast over New York City’s show-going scene this weekend. Whether you missed out on badges, drying your salty, resentful tears with a signed poster of André 3000, or have been too busy scoffing from your Black Flag-wallpapered cool dungeon to care (Childish Gambino? Mwahaha, tasteless fools), the reality is this is Governors Ball’s weekend, and we are just brunching in it. But have heart, badgeless masses, there are still plenty of killer shows to go around, all you have to do is check out our Top 5 Non-Gov Ball Shows of the Weekend, grab tickets, and then get out there and have fun while your friends cower in staph-infected port-a-johns and savor every last molecule of their $9 Bud Lights. And let’s be honest, for true music fans—Mountain Dew-backed neo-Woodstockism aside—it doesn’t get much better than that.

Pallbearer announce new album in advance of Northside Festival showcase

pbAfter two years, a million riffs, and countless tour dates, Southern Doom overlords Pallbearer—the de-facto metal breakthrough of 2012—have officially announced their sophomore album, Foundations of Burden, due August 19th via Profound Lore. Their simultaneously devastating-but-life-affirming debut, Sorrow and Extinction, is by no means an easy act to follow, but Pallbearer have armed themselves accordingly, recruiting Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Sleep, Red House Painters) to produce and Animetalphysical for what might be the raddest album art I’ve seen this year.

‘Tis the season… for holiday markets to popup all over the city. People line the streets hoping to score local handmade goodies and artisanal wares. Sure these markets are great places to hit with your Xmas checklist, but now, for the fist time ever, Press Vintage brings the flea to you. Introducing the First Annual #EATANDFLEA Brunch Bazaar, a holiday pop-up taking place at Tutu’s and combining all of your favorite weekend activities in one. Eat. Drink. Shop. Be Merry.

Frustrated with the commotion of other holiday fairs, Emma Bracy and Ben Martel, founders of Press Vintage, partnered with Tutu’s to create the first ever #EATANDFLEA Brunch Bazaar: brunch in the front, bazaar-ing in the back, with some special added touches (like sexy live jazz and free Perrier) that will take you out of holiday hell while you get your necessary shopping on.

This one-of-a-kind holiday shopping experience highlights local vendors with fly gifts for all. Between Press Vintage‘s men’s–women’s–unisex offerings and Various Love Affairs‘ handmade designer digs you’ll have your clothing needs covered. Friends think they fancy, huh? Check out the jewelry selection, including Alkhemi9‘s metal masterpieces and the special sneak-peak of jewelry line KRI.MARINO (formerly of Downtown Diaries fame).

#EATANDFLEA taking place at Tutu’s, 25 Bogart Street, noon to 6pm on Saturdays (12/14) and  (12/21).
