A 65-year-old man was punched in the face while walking his dog on Grand Street by a much younger assailant. From DNA Info:
The victim was walking on Grand Street near Graham Avenue on Tuesday, March 17 around 12:10 a.m. when the suspect tried to pet his dog, police said.
The suspect, who was about 20 years old, said, “I got two pit bulls and your dog is a p—y” before hitting the victim in the face, causing swelling, redness and a bloody nose, police said.
It was unclear what kind of dog the victim owned.
Is there such thing as a dog hate crime?
Former NYU math teacher Hans Shmidheiser (which sounds like a name you would make up when put on the spot) got arrested Friday for going on a rampage of eccentricity in Williamsburg. From NY Post:
Hans Shmidheiser, 30, approached a man walking his dog in Williamsburg around 8 a.m. on Friday, picked the pup up and asked it, “What the f–k is your name?” sources said.
The terrified owner fled and called cops.
An hour later, Shmidheiser — who taught at NYU from 2004 to 2008 while getting a Ph.D. in math — walked up to a female pedestrian. “He said he wanted to go to the hospital because he was drinking a lot of blood,” she told The Post. [Read more…]
The fashion show/contest is part of a bigger event called Bark For Life, “a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.” There will also be face painting and magic shows, which were sort of cool like five years ago.
It all goes down at Monsignor McGolrick Park (at the intersection of Russell and Nassau Avenues), with the dog show competition starting at 10 a.m. For a small donation, you can register your dog to “strut the doggie runway” and compete for prizes for Most Fashionable, Best Celebrity Look Alike, Best Haircut, Best Trick, and Hippest (Dog that Looks Most Like a Hipster).

It’s like the 2012 Where’s Waldo calendar where young, hip New Yorkers try to find themselves in the crowd in this trailer for LCD Soundsystem’s Shut Up and Play The Hits documentary about the band’s end. I wasn’t there, so instead of looking for myself and friends, I am just looking at James Murphy’s cute dog. So there’s something for everyone.
Have a dog or looking to adopt one? Stop by the Dog Daze of Summer Block party tomorrow between 11am-6pm on Berry between N 1st & Grand Street. There will be beer, food, and DOGS (lots of them-even some you can take home with you!). All proceeds from the party will go to BARC, Williamsburg’s only no-kill animal shelter.
