REVIEW: Full Moon Fest 2014

FullMoonFest

The 4th Annual Full Moon Fest by Matte Productions took over the beach at Governor’s Island on Friday, August 8th offering a evening of electronic music, dancing and gourmet snacks. It wasn’t your typical EDM crowd, with the age skewing older than I was expecting (thank God for 21+) and hardly any glowsticks to be found. The picturesque Manhattan skyline acted as the backdrop for a hopping party featuring two tent stages with thumping sound systems and a memorable lineup of eclectic electronic and rock acts.

New York’s Full Moon Fest took tips from Thailand’s famous monthly all-night beach parties scheduled to coincide with the lunar cycle. The venue at Governor’s Island was fantastic, and never did the intimate space feel too small to accommodate guests who came to dance under the waxing moon. Waterside cabanas with spectacular views of the mainstage were available for attendees who purchased the VIP option. However, early in the evening these remained mostly empty.

Full Moon Fest 2014

FullMoonFest

If you’ve studied your international party guide, you’d know that the Full Moon Festival is an all-night beach party that takes place on the island of Ko Pha Ngan in Thailand, the day before every Full Moon. Well this year you don’t have to go nearly as far to get a taste of what everyone’s talking about.

NYC’s version of the Full Moon Festival takes place on The Beach at Governor’s Island, Friday, August 8th. Featuring two stages, 13 artists (and more TBD!) and a number of fantastic food vendors, this party is sure to be second best to the real thing (except you’re still going to have to pay NYC prices for a massage the next day. My friend is in Thailand right now and said they are like, $5 an hour. YEAH, I KNOW – $5 FOR AN HOUR. But I digress .  . . )

Now, Let’s talk lineup:

Les Savy Fav played House of Vans

Brooklyn main stays Les Savy Fav rang in the end of the summer last night. House of Vans’ summer anyway. It was the last of this year’s free shows at the Greenpoint venue. Video can be found below, including snapshots of the opening sets by local synth poppers Small Black and Spanish dance rockers Delorean.

Final Pool Party Featuring Delorean and ???

We hear the guests are “super special” but still have no idea who will be closing out the summer. For now, we’re looking forward to Delorean! We’ll keep you posted on twitter.

Last Pool Party Canceled!

You’ll still be able to see Chromeo this weekend (we think) but due to financial disputes between Open Space Alliance (OSA) and JellyNYC the Delorean show scheduled for 8/29 ain’t gonna happen. Here’s what OSA has to say about the matter:

“We are deeply disappointed that the August 29th show has been canceled due to the continuing unmet financial obligations of the event’s promoter, Jelly. OSA can no longer cover both the costs of putting on these events—equipment, labor, and payments to the State for use of their park — and Jelly’s substantial debt. Our primary concern is improving open space in North Brooklyn, and we will not endanger our mission by putting the finances and reputation of our organization at risk by allowing Jelly to slide on its financial obligations.”

This of course sucks. The Pool Parties have become a Williamsburg tradition and we will hate to see them end. We’ll post Jelly’s side of the story as soon as we hear from them.
