I go away for a couple of weeks and look what happens… it’s like forgetting to lock your door but still being surprised when you find out all your stuff has been stolen. Between Brexit and Trump this year, you’d be forgiven if “the will of the people” merely leads you to the bottom of many a bottle. Alas, if for a couple of hours each night, you can try and forget reality with some great music.
You spend half the year waiting for summer and then you go to the beach and get terrible sunburn that still hasn’t gone away 5 days later. I’m here to tell you that summer is awful and you should just stay within 4 walls and listen to some live bands instead.
Thanks to Pete for subbing last week. Nothing helps me get over disappointing election results and earth shattering musicians dying (RIP Prince) than blowing a chunk of cash on records, so it’s more than fortuitous that my favourite label, The Numero Group, are hosting their third annual pop up this weekend; You can head over to 170 Franklin Street from Thursday until Sunday (details here). Greetings! We’ve had a pretty good week on the music side of things, between us we’ve seen Vaadat Charigim at Palisades and my esteemed metal heads caught Iron Maiden last night. It’s 20 degrees celsius as I type this (let’s not talk of that silly farenheit…) and spring is in the air, by which I mean the smell of semen from the Callery Pear’s (insert “Spring is coming” joke here). I should probably mention there are some great shows this weekend…
If you’re reading this, congratulations on surviving another week. As a reward, there are some excellent shows to be seen this weekend, free of invented “buzz”, just hands-on DIY venues and bands doing what they love.
This is the first weekend in which David Bowie no longer exists (and now, also tragically, Alan Rickman); still a hard concept to process. As the great man said, “I know when to go out, and when to stay in”, might I suggest the former this weekend. I’m not giving you much chance to put on your red shoes and dance with these suggestions, and you might get the blues, but if you decide the stay in, and get things done, perhaps the strange ones in the dome can lend us a book we can read up alone.
Happy New Year! Welcome back! You look… well, we all put a bit of weight on over the holidays. Did you have a nice break? Me too. Any resolutions? No, me either. The important thing is we made it through 2015. New year, same drill, here are the top 5 shows of the weekend!
