Halloween is on a Monday this year, so many of the major events are on Friday and Saturday. That said, The Brooklyn FRIGHT Bazaar runs all week in Greenpoint. Things start early on Thursday at The Gateway with Del Caesar (as Ceasar Clearwater Revival), No Ice (Bruce Springsteen & The E St Band) and more. There’s a great list of haunted houses here. And of course, classic Halloween events include The Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade on Saturday and the Village Halloween Parade on Monday.

Here’s our rundown of this year’s best events: [Read more…]

Screamer’s Pizzeria brings vegan pizza to Greenpoint

screamers

It seems like heresy to us, but to each their own:

Champs Jr. in Greenpoint (620 Manhattan Avenue), which mysteriously closed last month, is re-opening this Monday as an ALL-VEGAN PIZZA BY THE SLICE JOINT in partnership with Philly-based company Blackbird Pizzeria. The micro-Champs will now be a late night mecca of cruelty-free, hot n’ crusty gooey junk known as Screamer’s Pizzeria. Open daily, 11am-midnight. [Read more…]

Portland sandwich transplant Bunk opens in Wburg with mixed reviews

Grub Street paid Bunk a visit and was impressed:

The bathroom-wall photo of a wolfish ’50s-era Elvis gobbling a sandwich tells you everything you need to know about Bunk. Bunk is all about indulging appetites. And Bunk is all about the glory that is the sandwich. Two ideas, incidentally, that pretty much sum up the philosophy of the Underground Gourmet. The counter-service sandwich shop that opened recently in Williamsburg is a branch of a popular Portland, Oregon, mini-chain run by a crew of musician-cooks including co-founder Tommy Habetz, who once worked for Mario Batali as a Lupa sous-chef.

For his first Bunk foray outside Portland, Habetz hired Jake Adams, a former Milk Bar chef de cuisine, to oversee the kitchen. The sandwich-making modus operandi here is to start with the classics, then by judicious tweaking, scratch cooking, meticulous construction, and the use of outstanding bread and top-notch ingredients, improve upon them. Where to watch the 4th of July fireworks in Brooklyn, 2015

1430842780_mapSmall

This year, Macy’s will be having fireworks at two separate locations: 1.) a double barge barge just south of the Brooklyn Bridge, and 2.)  at a series of barges between East 23rd and 42nd Streets. Unlike last year, where it was hard to see much of anything from North Brooklyn, the Williamsburg and Greenpoint waterfront will be ideal places to see the big show.

WHERE TO SEE THE FIREWORKS

DUMBO & Brooklyn Heights

As always, DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights will have fantastic views and most waterfront locations, including Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 1 and the Promenade, are open to the public. You can also head the Brooklyn Bridge Garden Bar if you don’t mind shelling out $125. [Read more…]
