After almost 12 years in the neighborhood, the latest Williamsburg bar to fall victim to landlord issues is South 4th Bar & Cafe. They just posted the following:
It is with great sadness, frustration, and regret that we have to announce our closing come the end of July 2018. As the neighborhood living room in Williamsburg for almost 12 years, we fully believed this day would not happen, and if there were any other options available to us, that might be possible. Unfortunately, the Sauron of the small business world, greed, has ensnared us in its shadow. Simply put, our landlord seeks a gross amount of rent and is uninterested in a local favorite as a tenant. There is not an avenue that we have not pursued, nor an argument that we have not made.
We are not wanted, and that is that.
