The dog days are here and the release slate proves it, so let’s keep this brief so we can all get out there and enjoy what’s left of summer.
WHAT TO HEAR: We begin this week in Splitsville, where crusty black metal vets Krieg have teamed up with crusty crossover pioneers Integrity for Relapse’s crusty release of 2018 thus far. While 2016 found Krieg burying their sound deep within The Body’s collaborative framework, this meeting of the minds allows both bands’ considerably influential sounds to ooze through undiluted. Get some antiseptic on hand and check it out here.
On the heels of that rager, things slow down with Void Rot’s Consumed by Oblivion (Everlasting Spew/Sentient Ruin Laboratories), another slab of cavernous death/doom that is sure to scratch your Autopsy itch. Much like last year’s revered Spectral Voice LP, Eroded Corridors of Unbeing, Consumed By Oblivion deals in dissonant guitar “melodies”, lurching riffs, and barrel scraping growls, laying one on top the next for maximum punishment. It’s the style du jour at the moment, so go ahead and get on the bandwagon via bandcamp.
After that, we launch once more into the void with Void Ritual’s Death Is Peace (Ipos Music)—a batch of fatalistic grinding black metal from the heart of ABQ. All proceeds for that one go to the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, so make sure to support the cause.
Finally wash it all down with a pair of brutal tech-death beatdowns, Slaughter Monolith (Comatose Music)—the latest from Canadian outfit Abhorrent Deformity—and Monument of the End (Sumerian), A LOT of new notes from Swedish vets Soreption.
WHAT TO SEE: On the show front, things detonate tonight with Glassjaw / Quicksand / Primitive Weapons at Brooklyn Steel, Generation Suicida at El Cortez, Paper Trail at Hartley’s, Unlocking the Truth at Blackthorn 51, Latino Punk Fest at Brooklyn Bazaar, L.I. Metal and Hardcore Fest at Just Peachy, L.O.T.I.O.N at Saint Vitus, and Dreadnought at The Kingsland. Saturday keeps the pedal to the, well, metal, with BoundAlive at The Saint, the 30th Annual Riot Reunion in Tompkins Square Park, Rata Negra at Brooklyn Bazaar, and the opening night of NY Deathfest 6—headlines by Guttural Secrete—at Saint Vitus, while Sunday brings the weekend down with Wino at The Kingsland, Freya Wilcox & the Howl at Lucky 13 Saloon, the second day of that aforementioned Riot Reunion in Tompkins Square Park, Citizens Arrest at Bowery Electric, and day two of NY Deathfest 6, featuring Cephalotripsy, Artificial Brain, and more.
Monday is pretty quiet, apart from a listening party for the new Revocation record at Saint Vitus, before Tuesday awakens the beast once again with Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson at Jones Beach Theater and Hante. at Saint Vitus. Wednesday is likewise short of shows—it’s been a crazy couple weeks, even promoters get tired—before Thursday wraps things up with Phane at Brooklyn Bazaar, ENTRY at The Kingsland, Gracer at Saint Vitus, and Cephalotripsy/Malignancy at Lucky 13 Saloon.
WHAT THE FUCK: Mostly have avoided mentioning Deafheaven one way or the other this summer, but they just announced a new headlining tour with support from [drum roll please] DIIV! (Who are apparently still a band). LOOSE YOUR HOT TAKES UPON THE WORL LIKE A GREAT, CLEANSING FLOOD, METAL INTERNET.
