Yes it’s really happening. Today the MTA board awarded the $477 million dollars worth of repair contracts to Judlau Contracting and TC Electric. The choice to go with Judlau Contracting raises a red flag as they were responsible for delays during their recent work on the Second Ave subway. According to the NY Times there is a provision in place to encourage them to finish by the new reopening target of July 2020:
If it takes longer than 15 months to fix the Canarsie Tube, the company will be fined $410,000 per day, Mr. Plochochi said.
Cesar Pereira, a vice president at Judlau Contracting, said in a statement that the company had a “long and successful history” of working with the authority.
With the April 2019 shut down feeling closer and closer there is still no concrete plan for alternate transportation while the L train is down.
