Those looking for a new outdoor-dining option to replace the much-mourned back garden at Dumont are in luck. Northern Bell is located midway between Williamsburg’s Lorimer and Graham stops in the old Cheers space on Metropolitan. The space sticks closely to the rustic brick-and-wood boilerplate, and includes a spacious bar area up front with high-tops, a smaller dining area in the back and, best of hall, a handsome, lush garden.
As for the menu, expect Southern-inflected, beer-friendly grub – plates of chopped chicken and pulled pork, plus requisite sides of hushpuppies, macaroni salad and braised greens. There’s also an impressive selection of burgers, including elk and bison patties and a pimento cheese-topped rendition. Meanwhile, hash features heavily on the brunch menu – the one we ordered with BBQ chicken, Cheerwine chutney and goat cheese made for a nice break from Benedict blahs. The beer lists includes some unusual craft options, and many of the cocktails aren’t afraid to show off their twang with the likes of tea, bourbon and applejack.
