Update: Is a Cat Café opening in Williamsburg?

Update: Sadly, our suspicions were correct and the Cat Café is not real. The whole thing was done by Bedford + Bowery to promote a newsroom they are opening at that location. If anyone needs comfort I believe there is a lady on North 3rd and Bedford with 14 cats in her apartment. You bring the coffee.

Original post:
Williamsburg resident and frequent photographer Noah Kalina spotted the above sign in a window on Grand St. and Bedford Ave. this morning. Cat cafés are popular in Japan and have recently even come to the UK. Basically they are like a regular coffee serving café, except there are cats everywhere that you can play with. Here’s a video about one that is opening in London:

Who knows if the Williamsburg café is real, but this is Brooklyn so literally nothing would surprise me. If this is successful I’m planning on opening a competing spot simply by bringing a pot of coffee to one of the existing lots filled with stray cats in Williamsburg and charging an entrance fee. Who wants to invest?

  1. NYC law really prohibits animals in food establishments unless they are service animals, so I wonder how they plan to skirt this law.

    • I wonder if they could get around it by being a shelter that just so happens to look like a cafe and serves coffee.

      • maybe if they just give coffee away for free then it wouldn’t be considered a business as such. i gotta assume they know what they’re doing if they’re opening in such a high-profile spot, but i’ll believe it when i see it.
