Gina Turner is not your average disc jockey. On top of producing original house music and traveling the world as a performer, often alongside her husband Lucas aka Laidback Luke, she’s also a certified yoga instructor and a full-time mom. Her high energy sets have earned her coveted time slots at music festivals worldwide such as Holy Ship!, Ultra Japan, and too many more to list. This week she returns home to kick off the eighth annual Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival taking place Nov. 4th – 8th, but first we chatted with the talented New Yorker about fashion, new music and why she shows no signs of slowing down.
FREEwilliamsburg: As an avid yogi, I love that you are a certified instructor on top of being a powerhouse performer. How do yoga and meditation help you balance the rest of your packed and exciting life?
Gina Turner: Yoga is way more than just a workout, it’s also a way of life! I wouldn’t be able to juggle my DJ career without yoga and meditation!
FW: You and your husband Laidback Luke will be performing at this year’s Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. What challenges and rewards come with performing alongside someone with whom you are so close?
GT: I absolutely love to DJ with my husband! Music brought us together! So it just seems natural to DJ together! The only challenge I would say is we are both really alpha and want to be in control so sometimes we run into that while DJing!
FW: Can we expect you to drop any new tracks during your performance at BEMF?
GT: YES! I have a new EP coming out on NURVOUS records as well as a new remix I did for kid enigma & yos / b.finx
FW: You are a NYC-based DJ, but your talents have brought you all over the world. What is the one thing you miss most about NYC when you’re away from home?
GT: There’s nothing like my home routines like going to my Starbucks before yoga class by my house.
FW: I think you have an amazing sense of style that almost seems to meld modern grunge to club chic. From who/where do you take your fashion inspiration?
GT: Wow! Thank you! To me I love to be comfortable when I DJ, so you’ll find me in leggings and doc martens! But the girl in me loves to get my hair and makeup done! So it’s almost like tomboy glam!! Inspiration is every where it’s hard to pin point ! I’m constantly inspired by the 90s too! Think Marisa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny meets The Crow!
FW: What was it like being pregnant and performing aboard your last Holy Ship voyage? I went on Holy Ship last year for my first time, and I feel like superhuman energy is required to make it through that weekend as a regular attendee . . . you are a hero!
GT: I absolutely loved DJing pregnant! I performed until 37 weeks!
And holy ship was extra special because we recorded my back to back set with Luke there! And evalina was in my belly! It’s on my soundcloud! It’s the 2014 set.

FW: What’s next for you? Are you still touring much now that you have your little girl, or are you trying to stick to the studio keep a more laid back lifestyle (no pun intended)?
GT: Yes! I was exclusively breastfeeding for 16 months and proud, so now that I’m not doing that anymore I’m able to travel a bit more, since while I was nursing I traveled every where with the baby. She’s been on 82 long haul flights! I adore being a working mom, and don’t plan on stopping.
FW: Do you have a one-phrase mantra that you live by, or something that just helps to get you through the day?
GT: There are so many! And my mantra and inner dialogue changes daily!
But here are some recent ones:
“there’s always some gray, not everything is black and white”
“(inhale) “let” (exhale) go”
