Day drinking is one of our favorite activities. So is making fun of white people. We really try to find any excuse to partake in both highly-regarded American pastimes—and the Kentucky Derby is the one day a year we can REALLLLLLLY do both. So sip on an over-prived mint julep, wear your finest threads, pretend you care about high-society gatherings, and get a few laughs and eye-rolls in while Thad and Muffy talk about how ‘All Lives Matter’. Sound like a nightmare? Okay, okay. We won’t make you hang out with Thad and Muffy. We really do care about your mental health. With that being said, we’ve rounded up a list of some Kentucky Derby events (in Brooklyn) that actually won’t suck (we can’t promise that Thad and Muffy won’t roll through, though).
Northern Territory, 12 Franklin St., 3-7 pm
Head over to Northern Territory in Greenpoint for a Hudson Bourbon Mint Julep-fueled Derby party. Need to take a break from the races? Head to the rooftop and play some cornhole! Don’t forget to stop by their Bosco “GIF booth’ to take some memorable moving images in your (encouraged) derby attire—and you better look sharp to be in the running for some great prizes.
Berg’n, 899 Bergen St., 12-11 pm
They want you to “don your seersucker suits and fancy hats” for this party! While the event is all day long, we wouldn’t wait until the races start to get there—tables are first-come-first-serve. They promise a mountain of mint juleps so we’re definitely interested in what they’re offering.
Moonlight Mile, 20 Franklin St., 4-11:30pm
Perhaps the most lit party of them all—this one’s going all the way ’til 11:30! Like most of the parties you’ll find in Brooklyn this Saturday, the female patron with the best hat will win some good shiz. You can also grab a limited-edition Moonlight Mile Derby party event tee (pictured above).
Mable’s Smokehouse, 44 Berry St., 3pm
One of our favorite BBQ joints in Williamsburg is throwing their 7th-annual Kentucky Derby party this Saturday starting at 3 pm. They’ll be showing races all day—so go ahead and wager with your peers (but keep it friendly!). They’ll be serving up Derby pies and Wild Turkey Mint Juleps all day (along with their regular menu). Hats and derby attire encouraged!
The Bell House, 149 7th St., 2-8pm
You’ll need tickets for this party. It’s fine, their food specials make it worth it—they include Benedictine & Bacon on Brioche, Burgoo Stew, and a Chocolate Julep Pie. Suit up! Prizes for, you guessed it, best dressed and best hat will be awarded! Live music by Baby Soda Jazz Band.
Barley, 1025 Manhattan Ave., 4-7pm
You better dig through that closet of yours to find your finest Derby attire for this event. Barley’s will be giving away a dinner for two to the best-dressed lad or laddess (I think we just made that word up) at Saturday’s shindig. They’ll also be slingin’ dollar wings and $6 mint Juleps!
Pete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer St., 3-7 pm
Ladies, grab your (handmade) hats and head to Pete’s Candy Store for their 16th-annual Derby party (dudes are welcome too). This event will feature a competition (with prizes!) where all of you fabulous sheilas can show off your creativity for hat decor (we know you have it in ya!). Pete’s promises “Big hats, big bets, big bbq, big bourbon!” which sounds like enough to get us through the door. Oh yeah, there will be live music!
Humboldt & Jackson, 434 Humboldt St., 5pm
That horse looks like he’s gonna have a good ole time at Humboldt & Jackson’s Derby party this Saturday. Dress up! They, like many of these parties, will be holding a contest for best-dressed. Their featured Juelp is by Four Roses. They do require you RSVP for the event ([email protected]).
