Serving up “Everyday Israeli barbecue” Esh opened quietly last night in the space above Williamsburg’s Urban Outfitters. The Gorbals — which was always overpriced, overrated and empty — never caught on despite solid reviews and a celebrity chef Ilan Hall who won season two of “Top Chef.” From the Times:
This could be Tokyo or Osaka, where restaurants inhabit spaces several floors above the street in office buildings. But it’s Brooklyn, and this place on the third floor serves Israeli barbecue. The name means fire in Hebrew, said the chef, Ilan Hall. The restaurant replaces the Gorbals, his quirky venture. Esh puts his wood grill to better use, charring shwarma-spiced beef ribs, smoking butter-roasted cabbage and searing octopus showered with za’atar.
