False alarm about a gun on the L train causes panic at Bedford

Over the weekend, L Train passengers panicked when after someone supposedly yelled “gun” or “bomb” as the train approached the station. From the NY Post:

A false report of a man with a gun caused chaos at a busy Brooklyn train station on Saturday afternoon, as terrified staphangers lost their minds — and their shoes — as they scrambled for their lives, police said.

Reports of gunfire at the Bedford Avenue L station in Williamburg were made at around 1:20 p.m., police said. But when cops arrived, they found no evidence of a shots being fired or a gun, officials said.

“I was standing and all of a sudden, the entire opposite side of the train stampeded toward my end yelling that someone had a gun,” Tamara Kraus told the Post. “Luckily we were maybe only a minute away from the Bedford stop, so once we stopped everyone was just yelling and panicking to open the doors.”

“The train doors opened and it was like a herd of animals rushing out,” Kraus said. “But people, myself included, were falling repeatedly and there were sunglasses and bags and things all on the ground. As [soon] as I saw the light outside, I was crying and so was everyone else.”

Tatiana Smith, 22, said she walked onto the train platform when suddenly, people started screaming, “Run! Run! Someone has a gun! Run!” […]

Straphanger Scott Allan described the scene as “a stampede of sheer panic….”

The MTA tweeted that Broadway Junction-bound L trains are running with delays.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but the incident was assuredly terrifying for those involved.
