Is it just me, or is this month flying by already? Sometimes I worry that I’m going to wake up one day and wonder where my life has gone. One way I counteract those feelings of hopelessness is by intentionally filling my days with more experience and exploration. At least Brooklyn keeps the task simple. There are so many niche restaurants, pop-up markets, music venues, vegan dessert carts and cat cafes, I don’t think I’d be able to hit them all if I tried.
Join me in accepting the challenge to visit more dope spots this year! This week’s Club Crush picks cover four awesome Williamsburg venues – three of which I’ve been to many times, one I only recently explored and another I have yet to visit. I mean we pay exorbitant amounts of rent to be “where the action is”, right? This list offers some instructions on how to start adding more oomphf to your life.
1.) Input Presents: Outlier w/ Bonobo (Extended DJ Set) @ Output (Thursday, January 18th) – Last year’s “Best Albums” post gave a big nod to Bonobo’s 2017 LP, Migration. Now our boy Simon Green is swinging back through Brooklyn to share the goods in-person. His masterful productions are as beautiful as they are inviting. Let Bonobo’s emotionally charged tracks move you freely across the dancefloor. Advanced ticket sales are closed, so arrive early to purchase entry at the door. Get more info HERE.
2.) Derrick May @ Elsewhere (Friday, January 19th) – I must say, we’re impressed with Elsewhere and the club nights that PopGun Presents booked so far. This Friday they are bringing Detroit techno legend Derrick May to the main room, with support from Jeff Derringer and DatKing, meanwhile Lobster Theremin label star nthing heads the bill in Zone One. If you’ve yet to check out this awesome art exhibition hall and venue, this lineup is providing a pretty great reason to do so. Get tickets HERE.
2.) G Jones B2B EPROM @ Brooklyn Steel (Friday, January 19th) – Well, this is cool! Two emerging bass music artists have come together to present the G Jones B2B Eprom tour at Brooklyn Steel (the venue I haven’t been to yet!). Now don’t get me wrong, this is fairly “out there” bass music, but if you’re a fan of Bassnectar, Liquid Stranger or even Shpongle, there’s something here for you. In addition to their B2B, both producers will also play their own solo sets. Get tickets HERE.
3.) Destructo @ Output (Friday, January 19th) – Gary Richards‘ new year started off with a bang. The reigning President of LiveStyle America has plenty of new ish in the words, from the announcement of his fledging mystery project “All My Friends” (AMF), to his latest collaboration with American rap star, Yo Gotti. Joining Destructo in the main room are Habstrakt, Dillon Nathaniel and Deux Twins, meanwhile tech-house duo Golf Clap will be going “fore” it in the Panther Room. Get tickets HERE.
4.) Ilan Bluestone @ Schimanski (Saturday, January 20th) – The last time we caught Ilan Bluestone, he was spinning during the Anjunabeats Worldwide tour at Studio E in Bedstuy. Now the renowned producer will enTRANCE Schimanski when he returns on a headlining tour for his new studio album, The Scars. This set is sure to attract a fun loving crowd and make your spirit sweat. Remember to stay hydrated, friends. Get tickets HERE.
5.) Slick Rick: The Ruler (featuring DJ Kaos and The Slickettes) @ Brooklyn Bowl (Saturday, January 20th) – While this isn’t specifically an electronic pick, I figured hip-hop legend Slick Rick deserved some love for his birthday. In what has become an annual Brooklyn Bowl tradition, the self-proclaimed “Ruler” will return this Saturday in celebration of another year of life and the release of his highly anticipated studio album, The Art of Storytelling. DJ Kaos and The Slickettes are on board to help the rap legend spin tales that will make your mama blush. Pop on your eye patch, and don’t forget to arrive when doors open at 6 PM to dine on some famous Blue Ribbon eats before shit gets ratchet. Get tickets HERE.
