CLUB CRUSH SPECIAL EDITION ALERT! The Governors Ball will return to Randalls Island this weekend, and lucky for us, Brooklyn is getting a big slice of the action. In what has become an annual tradition, fans will have the opportunity to double down on many of the festival’s most highly anticipated acts thanks to the “Gov Ball After Dark” series. Jumpstart festival season by hitting one of the nearby Wednesday pre-parties featuring Dirty Projectors @ Public Arts or Aurora @ Bowery Ballroom, and then don’t stop until the weekend has come to a close. After all, half the fun of attending city-based festivals is experiencing the city! PS – there are a LIMITED NUMBER of 3-day passes still available for Gov Ball, which you can SNAG HERE.
The best events (in our humble opinion) are happening in our hood over the weekend. So, when you get back to Williamsburg on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (there’s a Brooklyn shuttle BTW), scurry over to local venues like The Knitting Factory, Schimanski NYC, Output, Brooklyn Bowl, Warsaw or Baby’s All Right for a second serving of beats from our favorite electronic artists. Here are five sets you won’t want to miss.
1.) cut/copy @ Brooklyn Bowl (Friday, June 1st) – It’s always a treat when we get to see scene legends play on a smaller scale. The Australian electronic band known fort timeless singles like Lights & Music (that song came out a decade ago, Holy Sh*t!) and Meet Me In A House Of Love finally released some new tunes last year after a long hiatus following their 2014 release of their fourth studio album, Free Your Mind. The four-piece group released a greatest hits playlist on Spotify and Soundcloud last summer, so you can expect a review of their favorites and a sneak peak at dancefloor bangers still to come. Advance tickets are sold out (no surprise there), but there will be a limited block available at the door that night. Get more info HERE.
2.) The Glitch Mob (DJ Set) @ Schimanski NYC (Friday, June 1st) – First of all, as an avid Glitch Mob fan, I strongly urge you to peep their live set at Gov Ball on Friday evening at 8:30 PM. It is here that you will get a glimpse of the Blade 2.0 – a production spectacle all its own! The California trio will undoubtedly make their spankin’ new album, See Without Eyes, the focal point of this performance, but don’t let this satiate your Glitch thirst quite yet. The boys have more tricks up their sleeves. While the industrial turbines won’t quite fit inside Schimanski’s modest main room, eDIT, Boreta and Ooah will show off their talents on the decks later that night in what’s certain to be a different musical experience altogether. Get tickets HERE.
3.) Flight Facilities (DJ Set) @ Output (Friday, June 1st) – Another act that shines both live and in DJ sets, the Australian duo known as Flight Facilities will have you flying high on Friday night following their early afternoon performance the same day. We saw a lot of hot remixes and new singles from FF this year, including some all-star collaborations with big names like Comedy Bang Bang star, Reggie Watts, and NЇKA. It’s safe to say a DJ set enhanced by Output’s Funktion 1 sound system system should scratch all the itches that have been burning since we last caught Hugo and Jimmy on their 2014 live tour. Get tickets HERE.
4.) Galantis @ Schimanski NYC (Saturday, June 2nd) – End your night on a high note with a visit to Schimanski NYC to see one of EDM’s catchiest duos. Known for earpleasing tracks featuring soaring vocals, beautiful melodies and entrancing production, we have no doubt that Schimanski’s immersive set-up will help the Swedish pop visionaries shine even brighter. Get tickets HERE.
5.) Vic Mensa @ Bowery Ballroom (Saturday, June 2nd) – You won’t see Vic Mensa turning knobs, but that doesn’t mean his beats aren’t absolute fire. The Chicago-based singer, wrapper and songwriter will charm much smaller audiences than he’s used to (he opened for Jay Z at Barclay Center’s last November) when he takes the stage at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night. The show isn’t technically in Brooklyn, but it’s just a short ride away on the J/M lines. If hip-hop is your thing, this is Gov Ball After Dark’s most luscious offering, hands down. Get tickets HERE.
