Wow, Bushwick! I’ve never see you look as good as you did yesterday at The Taste of Bushwick event. Hundreds flocked to this 4th annual food festival, hosted by The Bushwick Starr, held on a private street within the Boar’s Head distribution facility off the Morgan stop. And it was a beautiful scene, let me tell you.
Old and young, locals and transplants, the subdued and the flair’d, everyone came together for one purpose, one reason alone: food. (And maybe drinks too, yeah.)
Oh man, did the vendors deliver! Tony’s Pizza brought an entire spread of food and desserts. Archie’s Pizza came correct with dozens of pepperoni pies, square slices of course. The boys from Braven Brewery were there pouring. As were KCBC, premiering speciality beers for the festival.
A pair of skinny lads in togas manned a DJ booth playing “music from around the world” while softly narrating and giving shout outs to various vendors. Big Gay Ice Cream had their truck parked in the back, past the two massive tents of vendors and an open picnic seating area.
Beloved Bushwick stalwarts Los Hermanos brought the whole family and what looked like enough food to feed everyone twice over. The Bushwick Food CoOp served up flavored popcorn and The House of Yes, best dressed of course, offered boozey watermelon juice. Fine and Raw chocolate, Blue Bottle Coffee, Faro, The Sampler, The Rookery… man, even Faro, a Michelin star restaurant was on site – I’m telling you everyone was there.
But the best? Of all the food I ate, and I ate just about everything there, I can tell you that my favorite, the most delicious, hands down, was the tostada from Guadalupe Inn: pork, pickled habanero onions, black bean mash on a toasted corn tortilla.
However, this wasn’t a contest. This was a party, a potluck, a community gathering, and perhaps the closest Bushwick has ever come to hosting a networking event for industry professionals. And it was awesome. God bless the F&B owners and workers of Bushwick. With your tattoo sleeves glistening in the sun, serving delicious food with pride, and having fun doing it?
Bushwick, you’re beautiful! We should do this more often!
