6 Films we're supposed to like

In order to honor the announcement of Williamsburg’s forthcoming six-screen Cineplex, The Village Voice Blog decided to make a list of six films “Average Williamsbug Residents” would like to see available on the big screens at all times, year-round. I don’t know what the “Average Williamsburg Resident” is exactly, but what do you think of the list?

1. Annie Hall
2. The Wackness
3. The Royal Tenenbaums
4. Garden State
5. 500 Days of Summer
6. A Clockwork Orange

I would’ve bumped a few of these, and included Blade Runner, Goodfellas, and The Squid and the Whale.

Bushwick's New Monthly Dance Party

Tonight at Tandem will be the birth of Bushwick’s newest dance party. You can be sure to expect some Voltron levels of transmogrification with Beardwizard (one part Rude Dude) and Behold the Destroyer combining forces to form Sensual Harassment. It will be glorious, and it’ll make you wanna bone… especially if you’re a walrus. From Behold the Destroyer:

Tis mid December ya’ll, you know what that means? No, not some bullshit about the winter solstice or Santa Claus coming soon. Early December is the beginning of Walrus mating season! It’s a celebration bitches! That’s right from now till the end of February, walruses all over the world (read: the Arctic) are going to make patches of frigid ice look like Freaknik ’96. To commemorate Wally The Walrus putting it down on all them thick assed walrus P.Y.Ts, my man Jay from Rude Dudes (aka beardwizard) and I will be selecting some quality slowed down dance jams and chopped and screwed RnB tunes at Tandem Bar. Obviously, walruses need the slowed down jams — if you weigh over a ton you’re not trying to get it in to 2 Live Crew.

“Fuck around and catch an asthma attack”
Biggie Smalls

Come down at 11 and celebrate Walrus mating season, or just hangout in general, whatever floats your boat.

Free Tron (1982) showing at indiescreen

No need to go see that hyped new Tron: Legacy movie opening Friday. Williamsburg is not even getting a big fancy movie theater until next fall. That will probably be a nightmare, and tickets are pricey. Best go to indieScreen on Kent Avenue and watch a free screening of Tron, the original 1982 version, at 7pm that night instead. Brought to us by the internet service provider, Clear, the showing at the new Southside cinema is sure to fulfill your sci-fi needs on Friday and many other entertainment wishes to come with a digital cinema, a restaurant, and a full bar. As far as the Tron event, according to indieScreen’s box office:

The evening … includes cocktails at 7pm before the private screening of the original 1982 Tron followed by dinner at indieScreen.”

The event is RSVP only, so get on it:   [email protected]

A very Mayer Christmas

Christmas time really is here! I know it might be hard to tell in the middle of all this rain and crap weather, but I ate some gingerbread cookies last night and there are tons of lights up on the Avenues. So there is really no denying it.

Add this Mayer Hawthorne track to all your holiday mixtapes and iPod playlists. The soulful singer’s take on the Vince Guaraldi classic is pretty subtle. The kind of thing you can just put on in the background while your sitting by your fireplace sipping on some egg nog and falling in and out of sleep.

Don’t celebrate Christmas? Neither does Mayer. “All the best Xmas songs were written by Jews, and Chanukah songs suck,” he said on Twitter. It’s true, too! And “Christmas Time is Here” is the kind of track that can be played all year, regardless of religious practices. Stream it below or download it here.
